Downtown dwellers rejoice! The revamped Market Square has an enclosed dog park that runs along the 300 block of Milam Street. The Market Square Park Dog Run is dedicated in memory of dog lover Holly Anawaty, who lost a courageous battle with brain cancer in 2010.The park has separate areas for big dogs (taller than 15 inches) and small (under 15 inches tall).
Covering an expansive 2.76 acres along Westpark Drive, immediately east of Loop 610, Danny Jackson Family Dog gives your pooch plenty of room to run. The park has separate areas for large and small dogs, a pond for pets to frolic in and several hoses to wash them off if they roll in the mud. The park is named for former West University Place city councilman Danny Jackson. His dogs attended the dedication of the park in 2005.
Located on Highway 6 across from Bear Creek Park, the dog park dedicated to former U.S. Rep. Bill Archer is likely the biggest in the Houston metropolitan area at 20-plus acres. It includes double gated and fenced areas for large and small dogs, with large and small agility fun equipment, doggie swimming pools, water fountains, doggie showers, shaded areas with lots of trees and benches.
Named for George H.W. and Barbara Bush's dog, Millie, the 13-acre public park in west Houston includes large doggie pools — Dog Fancy magazine dubbed Millie Bush as having the coolest pool in the nation — doggie fountains, special doggie showers and lots of places to escape the sun.
Discovery Green features the Kinder Large Dog Run and Harriet and Joe Foster Small Dog Run so pets can take an off-leash break. The areas feature crushed-gravel ground cover, fountains and seating.
This inside-the-loop dog park, on Dunlavy south of Richmond, was the first neighborhood park in Houston to allow dogs to legally run free, off-leash in a designated dog zone in 2004. Around 9,000 square feet in size, the fenced-in space is long but not terribly spacious. However, benches around large trees provide a gathering spot for neighbors who socialize while their dogs roam around.
