Solange Knowles, Amal Clooney and the Return of the Wedding Trousseau

Solange Knowles’s much-ballyhooed wedding on Sunday heralded the advent of what will probably be numerous fashion trends: capes, all-white bridesmaid ensembles and so on. But the one that I think may really take hold is the return of the wedding trousseau. No longer is one great bridal dress enough. Now a major nuptial event demands many.

Ms. Knowles, of course, sported three different looks on her big day: the Stéphane Rolland jumpsuit she cycled up in; the Kenzo dress she got married in; and the second Stéphane Rolland jumpsuit, which she boogied in.

In this, she followed the lead of Amal Clooney, whose Venice wedding featured a whole catwalk’s worth of outfits from brands such as Stella McCartney, Dolce & Gabbana, Giambattista Valli and, of course, Oscar de la Renta, who made the wedding dress. And there was Nell Diamond, the daughter of Bob Diamond, the former chief executive of Barclays, who was married last month at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France, where she wore gowns by Rosie Assoulin and Prabal Gurung, as well as a wedding dress by Olivier Theyskens.

It’s not that multiple wedding looks are new — the Duchess of Cambridge wore two Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen looks during her 2011 wedding to Prince William; Kate Bosworth, two de la Renta dresses at her wedding earlier this year. But between Mrs. Clooney and Ms. Knowles, they may have reached a whole different level and, I would guess, influence.
