Arrest made in sexual assault of SMU student

Torey Jamal Harris

University Park police have made an arrest in the Sept. 7 sexual assault of a Southern Methodist University student.

Torey Jamal Harris, 23, was arrested by Navarro College Department of Public Safety in Corsicana in connection with another aggravated sexual assault on Sept. 15, said University Park police chief Greg Spradlin.

Navarro College law enforcement officials noticed the artist sketch of the University Park suspect was similar to the Navarro assault suspect description, Spradlin said.

Harris confessed to University Park police that he had committed the sexual assault and provided details about the crime that had not been publicized, Spradlin said.

Harris is not believed to have been a student at SMU.

He is currently being held in the Navarro County Jail. Bond was set at $200,000 for aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault charges from the Sept. 7 attack.

The woman told police she was attacked about 11:15 p.m. while she was jogging half a mile from campus in the 6700 block of Willard Drive, near Central Expressway. She said the attacker had a small cutting tool and grabbed her from behind.

University Park city manager Robbie Corder met with neighbors Wednesday about safety concerns and lighting.

Corder took a tour of the neighborhood and listened to residents’ suggestions about how the city can improve safety. Some residents said the city should add lighting, security cameras and police patrols. City crews have already cut back tree limbs and brush.
