New York Mets History

The New York Mets are one of the most well known and beloved teams in the history of baseball. The team was founded and introduced to the National League in 1961. Formerly known as The New York Metropolitan Baseball Club Inc., their name was shortened to the Mets by former club owner Joan Payson due to it's fan appeal and historical background, as well as its relevance to the metropolitan area. Mets tickets went on sale in 1962 when the team played the first official game in franchise history against the Cardinals in St. Louis. From then on, they've gone on to win two World Series, four pennants, and five National League East titles. Mets tickets sales have matched these amazing accomplishments over the years. The enduring legacy the Mets have created can't be found in scoreboards, or in their number of wins or losses. It can't be measured in the number of Mets tickets that have been sold, or how many home runs have been hit. Their lasting legacy comes from their endurance in the face of adversity, their unstoppable will to succeed, and their history of outstanding players. Players like: Tom Seaver, who helped the Mets win the 1969 World Series Championship; Darryl Strawberry, who still holds the Mets' career record for Home Runs, RBI, and hits; Mike Piazza, the Mets favorite and the catcher with the most home runs all-time. These players, and many more like them are the legacy that the Mets create. Their phenomenal players are the reason so many Mets tickets are sold every year.

Citi Field and the Fans

Before the Mets' first official home stadium was completed, they played at the Polo Grounds from 1962-1963. In 1964, the team moved to their own stadium. William A. Shea Municipal Stadium, or simply called Shea Stadium for short, opened in April of 1964. Located in the borough of Queens, Shea Stadium saw the sale of many Mets tickets before it closed after the team's final game there in September of 2008. In 2009 the Mets moved into their current stadium, Citi Field. The team's new stadium is located in Flushing Meadows, adjacent to where Shea Stadium used to stand. Mets tickets were sold there for the first time in April of 2009. Citi Field will also be host to the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game; this will be the second time the Mets have hosted the game since the opening of Shea Stadium in 1964. The Mets held the New York baseball attendance record for 29 years. The team broke the 1948 attendance record held by the New York Yankees in 1970. That year, close to 2.7 million Mets tickets were sold. They continued to surpass this achievment, breaking their own record five times up until 1999. Fans buy Mets tickets because they love watching a team that gets so much joy from playing the game. Their loyalty never ends; win or lose they're there to cheer on their team.

Mets News

10-1-14: The Mets are trending in the right direction heading into 2015. The success of young starters Zack Wheeler and Jacob deGrom are encouraging. In his rookie season, deGrom was dominant. The righty posted a 9-6 record with a 2.69 ERA while racking up 144 strikeouts in 140.1 innings. DeGrom should win NL Rookie of the Year. The Mets have the pitching in place and they will be wild-card contenders in 2015 if they can acquire a bat or two for their lineup.

9-30-14: The New York Mets announced this week that the team extended GM Sandy Alderson with a new deal that will run through the 2015-2017 seasons to keep him in New York. The Mets are also going to retain manager Terry Collins through at least the 2015 season after an announcement was made this week. Alderson is already working towards the 2015 season and speculation has begun on whether the Mets will trade Bartolo Colon, Daniel Murphy, Dillon Gee, and/or Jon Niese this winter. Niese is set to earn $7 million in 2015 and has a $16.5 million salary guaranteed for 2016 while Colon is set to earn $11 million next season in the final year of his deal. The Mets are looking to shed payroll so they can get back into the free agency market this winter to try and improve the team. One player the Mets will not have to pay next season is outfielder Bobby Abreu as he has announced his retirement following the 2014 season. Abreu retires at age 40 just a year removed from a miraculous comeback to the major leagues after being out of the game for a few years. Abreu worked out in winter ball and eventually landed in the major leagues with the Mets this season in two different stints before announcing his retirement. New York finished the 2014 season with a 79-83 record and will not be in the 2014 postseason.

9-25-14: The Mets, like many teams, are building for the future. Jacob deGrom probably clinched NL Rookie of the Year honors with two impressive starts last week. He's now 9-6 with a 2.63 ERA and 144 strikeouts in 140.1 innings over 22 starts, including a game where he struck out the first eight batters he faced. DeGrom should get one more start to pad his resume.

9-23-14: The New York Mets are in full on 2015 building mode and news broke this week that the team was very likely to retain manager Terry Collins and General Manager Sandy Alderson. Who Alderson and Collins will have playing shortstop for the Metropolitans next season remains a mystery as the team has not seen much from the likes of Ruben Tejada and Wilmer Flores. Tejada is considered to be a non-tender candidate this season while Flores has not excelled with the bat as many hoped or expected at the big league level. The Mets have already announced an unwillingness to add payroll this winter to an addition of a Hanley Ramirez or equivalent type player seems unlikely at this time. The team also announced that the team would likely keep their payroll in the low to mid $80 million range for the foreseeable future. In the same breath that the Mets announced a plan to lower payroll the team also announced they would be sending scouts to watch Cuban defecting outfielder Yasmani Tomas as he showcases for teams. Tomas is expected to get a deal in the $100 million range for a long time as he is just 23 years old.

9-18-14: The Mets had quietly put together a nice 7-1 stretch to pull within four games of a .500 record, prior to them dropping three out of four to the Nationals over the weekend. Mets righty Jacob deGrom is most likely the NL Rookie of the Year front-runner. He's gone 8-6 with a 2.68 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 134 strikeouts in 134.1 innings of work over 21 starts. DeGrom matched a modern MLB record by striking out his first eight batters Monday night against Miami.

9-16-14: The New York Mets really like their young second baseman Dilson Herrera but the team is still not fond of the idea of trading fellow second baseman Daniel Murphy to accommodate. The Mets do not believe that teams will pay a fair compensation package for Murphy and instead may teach Murphy multiple positions in the offseason to turn him into their own version of the Rays Ben Zobrist. The Mets may have to play Murphy all over to save on payroll as the Mets may have to increase payroll in 2015 or face a budget crisis. New York already has over $54 million invested in Bartolo Colon, Jon Niese, Curtis Granderson, and David Wright alone while Murphy, Bobby Parnell, Dillon Gee, and Lucas Duda among others are in line for a significant raise in arbitration in 2015. The Mets fans must be extremely disappointed in the front office as they watch former Mets center fielder Chris Young go from struggling to crushing the ball while with the New York Yankees. The Mets designated Young for assignment in August and he quickly signed a minor league deal with the Yankees and has been a saving grace in the Bronx all September long. Young finished his Mets career with a .205/.283/.346 in 287 plate appearances.

9-12-14: The Mets picked up series wins against the Marlins and Reds on the road last week. They have won three straight games and look to close out the season strong with an eye on next season. Right-hander Jacob deGrom continues to impress, as he's gone 8-6 with a 2.62 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 20 starts. His emergence, along with the development of Zack Wheeler, may be the biggest positive for the team this season. Mets fans are hoping Matt Harvey can return next season from Tommy John Surgery and be a force.

9-9-14: The New York Mets may be forced to turn second baseman David Murphy into a super utility player with the influx of young talent that is on the cusp of competing in the major leagues. Young infielders Wilmer Flores and Dilson Herrera are both close to being major league ready at second base which may cause New York to move or trade Murphy. New York seemed unwilling to move Murphy at either of the trading deadlines this season and have been searching for a shortstop for the future for a few seasons now so a move there may be in the cards for Murphy and the Mets as soon as 2015. New York may use spring training to get Murphy acclimated to a new position or positions and bring along their young talent from the minor leagues. Another player the Mets expect back in spring training next season is relief pitcher Bobby Parnell who is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. This is great news for the Mets organization as it was early in the 2014 season when Parnell initially suffered the injury that needed the ulnar collateral ligament surgery. Having Parnell back quickly could give the Mets a good problem to have with the righty likely to join breakout relievers Jenrry Mejia, Vic Black, and Jeurys Familia in that Mets bullpen.

9-4-14: The Mets remain a team who could take a big step forward in 2015. They did have a rough month of August, as the Mets went just 12-17 with a minus-27 run differential. Starter Zack Wheeler has improved since the All-Star break, going 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 51.1 innings over eight starts. He should give the team a second strong arm alongside Matt Harvey once he returns.

9-2-14: The New York Mets attempted to trade starting pitcher Bartolo Colon this week as the revocable waivers trading deadline loomed. Colon cleared waivers due to his 2015 salary and has not garnered interest from the Kansas City Royals or Los Angeles Dodgers this week according to reports. The Mets were reportedly asking for quality prospects back in return for Colon which turned a lot of teams off as the deadline came to pass and the talks for the 41 year old quieted. The Mets may not trade Colon this season or offseason but are exploring trade possibilities for starting pitcher Zack Wheeler, although Wheeler expressed an interest with staying with the team this week while speaking with reporters. New York may also move Travis d’Arnaud in a trade or move the catcher to left field due to his concussions and inability to stay healthy of late. A’rnaud’s bat may not be sufficient enough to be a corner outfielder so he may attract another team who believes he can stick behind the dish.

8-27-14: It has not been a great year for the Mets, who are in danger of dropping to the NL East cellar after a strong showing by the Phillies over the last week or so. However, there have been plenty of positive takeaways. First baseman Lucas Duda is hitting .260 with 26 home runs and 76 RBI. The team clearly made the right choice when it decided to move Ike Davis and hold on to Duda.

8-26-14: The New York Mets may trade Bartolo Colon this offseason and try to net some minor league prospects in the process. Colon did clear revocable waivers this week and is eligible to be traded to any team for the remainder of the season but a deal is still unlikely to be worked out before the end of the season. New York is more likely to hold onto their young pitching talent in Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, Kevin Plawecki, Rafael Montero, and Jon Neise although the five aforementioned pieces would bring back much more in a trade. The Mets are still building towards the future and currently sit at 61-70 and are 15 games behind the first place Washington Nationals in the division. Surprisingly the Mets are only eight games back of the Wild Card leading San Francisco Giants as well.

8-20-14: The Mets have already had a rough week taking on the Oakland A's and finish off the week with the Los Angeles Dodgers. New York did release outfielders Chris Young and Bobby Abreu to open up more playing time for some of their younger guys. Matt den Dekker has looked good since being recalled. He's likely to be the starting left fielder next season.

8-19-14: The New York Mets have hinted that manager Terry Collins, who has been with the team since the 2011 season, is likely to return for the 2015 season after a less than stellar 2014 season. The Mets have also re-signed outfielder Bobby Abreu to a minor league deal and will stash him back in Triple-A without a 40 man roster spot. Abreu hit .238/.331/.336 with one home run in 67 games with the Mets this season before being designated for assignment and released earlier this month. The Mets released Abreu last month only to bring him back and also released Chris Young after designating him for assignment. Young signed a one year deal worth $7.25 million this winter and will now look to latch on with another team for the rest of this season.

8-13-14: The Mets are 20-17 since the beginning of July, but they dropped back-to-back series to the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals to kick off the month of August. They rebounded by beating the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend, and were pummeled by Washington on Tuesday. They still have an outside chance at posting a winning record this year, but it’s not very likely.

8-12-14: The New York Mets have placed their outfielder Curtis Granderson on revocable waivers and may look to unload the left hander. Granderson is in the first year of a four year deal worth $60 million deal that the Mets gave him this winter. At the time of this writing starting pitcher Bartolo Colon had not yet been placed on revocable waivers although the move is expected as the Mets tried to trade the righty before the July 31st trading deadline. The Mets also announced that the team inquired about the Rockies Carlos Gonzalez and/or Troy Tulowitzki before the trading deadline but ultimately could not get a deal done. The Mets are in need of an outfielder now that they designated center fielder Chris Young for assignment. Young signed a one year deal worth $7.25 million this offseason and only managed a .205/.283/.346 triple slash with eight home runs and seven stolen bases. Matt den Dekker has been called up take his spot on the roster and his position in the field.

8-6-14: Zach Wheeler pitched 6 2/3 innings to earn his fourth consecutive decision, helping the Mets beat the NL East-leading Nationals 6-1 Tuesday night. Mets closer Jenrry Mejia hurt his back in Monday's loss against San Francisco. Right-hander Matt Harvey, who is recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery, threw off a mound for the first time Tuesday since he went under the knife.

8-5-14: The New York Mets ended the week by designating outfielder Bobby Abreu for assignment ending his comeback try in the major leagues. The Mets made no trades at this year’s trading deadline and will instead give the 25 man roster spot to outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis. The Mets had many suitors for Daniel Murphy, including the Washington Nationals, and Bartolo Colon, including the Baltimore Orioles, but ultimately decided to hold on to both veterans for next season. The Mets currently sit at 53-59 and are in fourth place in the NL East 8.5 games behind the first place Nationals.

7-30-14: The New York Mets have been quiet at this year’s trading deadline thus far even after putting starting pitcher Bartolo Colon and second baseman Daniel Murphy on the block. Mets GM Sandy Alderson has stated that the Mets could be close on a couple of moves but a reluctance to move top prospects in a mega deal will likely keep New York from making any significant trades this week. One mega deal would be the deal that brought Troy Tulowitzki to New York for Noah Syndergaard, the team’s once untouchable top prospect. The Mets have one of the better futures in baseball if you look at their pitching prospects, Syndergaard included, but the team also was in attendance to watch Rusney Castillo as he worked out for teams. Castillo is the latest product of Cuba to officially defect and come to the major leagues and could be ready to play center field right away in the majors.

7-28-14: Lucas Duda’s home run off former Met Francisco Rodriguez was a part of New York’s three-run ninth inning as the Mets defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-2, on Friday. Although New York dropped its game on the previous day, the organization recalled infielder Wilmer Flores who was hitting very well in the minors.

7-24-14: Jacob deGrom, who improved to 4-5 on the year, held the Mariners to just five hits and one run over seven innings of work as the Mets downed Seattle 3-1. DeGrom walked just one and struck out seven. During his past six starts, deGrom is 4-1 with a 1.59 ERA. He's 3-0 with a 0.86 ERA during his past three starts, walking just three and striking out 26. Lucas Duda hit his 15th home run of the season, a whopping 446-foot drive off the second deck scoreboard in right field in the eighth inning.

7-21-14: The New York Mets have been reluctant to make starting pitcher Bartolo Colon and second baseman Daniel Murphy available in trades but have since made Colon available this trading deadline. With Colon’s age the team does not expect to get significant pieces in return, like a shortstop for example, but may get a few pieces to help build towards the 2015 season. Colon has not received much interest to date but with the likes of Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee, and David Price still on the market that is understandable. Chris Young and Eric Young Jr. are also said to be available in trades for the right price. Young is a free agent after the end of the season but Young has two more years of team control after 2014.

7-19-14: The Mets improved their record to 8-1 in their last nine games with their 5-4 victory on Friday in San Diego. The win was more a result of the team’s bullpen than starter Bartolo Colon. Sources reported that the Mets made Colon, who threw five innings of four-run baseball on Friday, available for trades earlier this week. Travis d’Arnaud’s eventual game-winning single in the top of the ninth and New York’s bullpen, which threw four scoreless innings, helped the Mets get to the victory.

7-17-14: The Mets entered the All-Star break an NL-best 8-2 over their last 10 games, and had they not gone through a 1-7 rough stretch prior to getting hot, they could be right on the heels of the Braves and Nationals for the top spot in the NL East. Bartolo Colon could end up traded, even if the team doesn't sell aggressively. He has had a solid year, and the team is expected to have a plethora of starting pitching next year.

7-15-14: The New York Mets are falling out of contention in the National League East and are reportedly ready to move starting pitcher Bartolo Colon and possibly second baseman Daniel Murphy in a deal at the trading deadline. In previous weeks the reports have always stated the Mets would prefer to hold onto Colon to help ease Matt Harvey back from Tommy John surgery in 2015. The Mets were also said to be discussing internally an extension for Murphy. The team wants to contend next season and Colon’s $10 million could go a long way for the team plus whatever pieces they received for the hot and well sought after Murphy could push the team over the hump. The Mets are in third place with a 45-50 record and trail the first place Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves by seven games at the break.

7-14-14: On Wednesday, the Mets extended their season-long winning streak to four games. In that game, Dillon Gee, who was activated from the disabled list after missing two months, allowed just one run in seven innings in the Mets’ 4-1 victory. Although New York dropped Thursday’s game, David Wright and Zack Wheeler led the Mets to a 7-1 win against the Miami Marlins on Friday.

7-10-14: New York rookie Jacob deGrom fanned 11 batters in seven shutout innings of work and also delivered a hit from the No. 8 spot in the batting order as the New York Mets beat up on All-Star Julio Teheran and the Atlanta Braves 8-3 Tuesday night. The Mets set a team record at Citi Field with 18 hits. The win also marked the franchise's 4,000th victory since starting out as an expansion team in 1962.

7-7-14: The David Wright-less Mets rebounded from losing Jon Niese in the first inning of Friday’s game against the Texas Rangers at Citi Field. Carlos Torres struck out four batters over 4.2 innings of two-run baseball to keep New York in the game. Travis d’Arnaud’s double in the eighth inning drove in two runs and led the Mets to the 6-5 victory. This win ended their four-game losing streak.

7-3-14: Despite homers from Curtis Granderson and Daniel Murphy, the Mets fell to the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Tuesday. The Mets have now lost three straight and six of their seven to fall 10 games below .500 for the first time this season. Daisuke Matsuzaka got the start for New York and allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings of work. He has now lost three straight starts. The Mets are nine games back of Atlanta in the relatively weak NL East.

7-2-14: The New York Mets are likely to be sellers at this year’s trading deadline but seem set to keep second baseman Daniel Murphy in Queens. The Mets are instead said to be internally discussing a contract extension with Murphy. The Mets may look at dealing away starting pitcher Bartolo Colon, although a deal seems unlikely, and other veterans not named David Wright. The Mets will need Colon next season as they continue to rebuild and try to bring Matt Harvey back from Tommy John surgery slowly. The Mets traded away first basemen Ike Davis a little over two months ago and have enjoyed a good season from first baseman Lucas Duda while Davis has continued to struggle in Pittsburgh. The Mets are down in the NL East division but seem to be unlikely to have much to sell despite a 37-45 record at the halfway mark of the 2014 season.

6-30-14: Until the last few days, the Mets had been playing very well recently. They had won three consecutive games and five of their last six contests, but then lost three straight games. They dropped Wednesday’s contest to the Oakland Athletics and lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday and Friday. They activated Juan Lagares from the disabled list, but David Wright is undergoing an MRI on his shoulder on Saturday.

6-26-14: Travis D'Arnaud hit a three-run homer in his return from a demotion, outfielder Chris Young hit two home runs and the New York Mets beat up Scott Kazmir and the Oakland Athletics 10-1 Tuesday night for their season high-tying third consecutive victory. Bartolo Colon shut down his former team pitching four-hit ball over eight innings against MLB’s best team. David Wright tied a career high with an RBI in his seventh straight game. The Mets sit 5 ½ games back of Washington in the NL East.

6-24-14: The New York Mets have agreed to a deal with their first round pick Michael Conforto worth $2.97 million. The deal is right at the slot recommendation for the 10th overall pick as Conforto was one of the better and more polished bats in all of the draft this year. The Mets are faced with the predicament of what to do when Travis d’Arnaud returns to the big club and are weighing their options of whether to option Anthony Recker or expose Taylor Teagarden to waivers and possibly lose him if Teagarden elects free agency. The Mets could always let Teagarden walk and open up a spot for catching prospect Kevin Plawecki. The Mets announced this week that they would likely go the way of the Athletics and Rays signing smaller free agent contracts and building from within rather than acquiring a big name like Giancarlo Stanton. It may be another long summer or two in Flushing for the Mets fans.

6-18-14: Jon Niese allowed five runs, three earned, in six innings of work Tuesday night as the Mets fell to the Cardinals 5-2. The lefty has made 18 consecutive starts allowing three or fewer earned runs. His streak is the longest active in the majors, extending to last September. However, he is only a pedestrian 5-5 during that span. David Wright did hit his first homerun on the road this season, which is a good sign. He entered the game 3 for 43 in his past 13 games. He does lead the Mets with 34 RBI, but has only four this month. New York is six games back of Washington.

6-17-14: The New York Mets finally got their player to be named later in the Ike Davis trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates and it is Blake Taylor. Taylor was the second round pick for Pittsburgh, 51st overall, in last year’s MLB First Year Players Draft. Taylor is a 19 year old starting pitcher that was ranked as the 40th best prospect in last year’s draft rankings. The Mets have also informed manager Terry Collins that his job is safe even though the team is well under the .500 mark and falling farther and farther behind in the National League East division. The Mets management has stated that if the team was contending in July they have the pieces to make a trade to improve the team but would not look at adding payroll until after this season which has to be disappointing for a team and a fan base that are right on the cusp of either continuing to be patient or wanting to seriously make a run at winning again.

6-10-14: The New York Mets selected Michael Conforto out of Oregon State with their first pick in the 2014 MLB First Year Players Draft on Thursday hoping he would be the future of their outfield. The Mets did some roster shuffling when they send relief pitcher Buddy Carlyle down to Triple-A Las Vegas after designating him for assignment last week. The Mets also demoted Travis d’Arnaud and called up Taylor Teagarden to handle the catching for club temporarily ending a frustrating tenure with the highly touted d’Arnaud. The Mets are falling in the National League East division and are currently 28-34 and five games back in a currently weak division.

6-3-14: The New York Mets already have two rookies in the starting rotation in Jacob deGrom and Rafael Montero and it does not look like their top prospect Noah Syndegaard will be joining the duo after being placed on the Triple-A disabled list with an elbow injury. The Syndegaard injury does not sound good and the dreaded Tommy John surgery is a possibility, although right now it is merely being called mild flexor pronator strain. The MRI results were negative for Syndegaard but he will still be shut down for a few weeks just to be on the safe side. The Mets also released closer Jose Valverde and fired their hitting coach in Dave Hudgens this week. Manager Terry Collins, maybe feeling the ice under his feet thinning, went off in a postgame interview using expletives when asked about the firing. Vic Black seems like the likeliest of people to replace Valverde on the roster and Hudgens has been replaced by minor league hitting instructor coordinator Lamar Johnson. This may be just the beginning of roster and personnel shake ups coming the Mets way as the team continues to struggle once again in the National League East division.

5-28-14: The New York Mets were said to be targeting shortstop Stephen Drew as far back as this offseason and spring training and with him officially off the board the Mets search has shifted to the Mariners Nick Franklin and Brad Miller, and the Arizona Diamondbacks Didi Gregorious. It is probably worth mentioning that Mets GM Sandy Alderson is said to have a great relationship with both Tony LaRussa and Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers for whatever that is worth. The new has worn off the Mets as they have dropped to fourth place in the National League East Division and have multiple rookies in the starting rotation. The Mets also welcomes back Ike Davis and his new team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, for a series beginning on Memorial Day marking the first time David returned to Citi Field to face his former club.

5-21-14: The New York Mets are coming off a split in the latest edition of the Subway Series with the New York Yankees. The Mets won the first two games in Yankee Stadium and got shutout in the two games in Citi Field but did get encouraging starts from rookies Jake deGrom and Rafael Montero in the process. We also learned this week that Wil Myers, back when he was a member of the Kansas City Royals farm system, was offered in a trade with the Mets that would have sent Zach Wheeler and Jonathan Niese to Kansas City in return. The Mets could have had another young exciting player to build around but would have given up two quality arms to get the deal done. The Mets have slipped to fourth place in the National League East division and trail the first place Atlanta Braves by four games in the division.

5-15-14: The New York Mets look to keep their surprisingly successful season going this week as they play against the New York Yankees in the latest version of the Subway Series. The first two games are played in Yankee Stadium and the last two will be played at Citi Field. In the first game at the home of the Mets New York fans will get a glimpse into their future after top pitching prospect Raphael Montero has been called up and will make the start Wednesday. The Mets will shift Jenrry Meija to the bullpen to try and solidify the end of the games where the Mets have had some issues all season long. Montero is ranked as the 60th best prospects in all of baseball according to Keith Law and is the Mets third best prospect behind current major leaguers Noah Syndegaard and Travis d'Arnaud.

5-7-14: The New York Mets are struggling to find any kind of consistency in their bullpen and have recently been considering calling up their top pitching prospects in Jacob deGrom and Rafael Montero to fill the void. deGrom can hit 94-95 MPH as a starting pitcher, although sits comfortably in the 92-93 MPH range, and would be better suited than Montero for the bullpen role. There has been some controversy over the Mets and their low payroll lately but the Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson stated that New York was ready and willing to add payroll at this year's trading deadline if it improved the team, specifically in the starting rotation. Alderson and the Mets organization is standing by their prediction of 90 wins for the team this season although they have a ways to go after starting the first month of the season barely over .500 with a negative run differential.

4-28-14: The New York Mets have had a bit of a surprising start to their 2014 season with the second best record in the National League East division to start the year. The Mets are above .500 and pitching well enough, even without Bobby Parnell and Matt Harvey who both had Tommy John surgery, to stay in every game. Long time Tigers closer Jose Valverde has had a roller coaster of a career the last few seasons but is back in the majors and in the closing role in New York and is as animated as ever. The Mets finally ended the Ike Davis era earlier in the month trading the struggling first basemen to the Pittsburgh Pirates allowing Lucas Duda to take over the roll full time in Flushing. Be sure to vote for Duda and all your favorite Mets players in the 2014 MLB All Star Game this July by voting now, voting opened up this week for the game.

4-14-14: The New York Mets haven’t been on top of their game to start 2014, as they sit at just 5-7 in fourth place of the NL East through the first couple of weeks. A 14-2 beatdown against the L.A. Angels capped a 2-1 series loss where they gave up 25 total runs. On the bright side, New York did kick off the week with a 2-1 series win over the Atlanta Braves. The Mets will need to pick up the pace on offense to get things going this season, as no one on the team has yet to top one homer.

4-7-14: The New York Mets continued their struggles to start the 2014 MLB season, as they got swept by the Washington Nationals in their first series of the year. The Mets brought the bats in a 9-7 opening day loss to the Nats, but couldn’t hack it with a combined three runs the next two games. New York got their first two wins of the season against the Cincinnati Reds in their second series of the year, but missed out on a sweep with a 2-1 loss at home.

4-1-14: The New York Mets looked good for much of their opening day battle with the Washington Nationals, but in the end they weren’t good enough. New York took a commanding 3-0 lead early on and led two more times, but couldn’t seal the deal in the ninth inning and ended up dropping their first game of the year to the Nationals, 9-7. Andrew Brown was a bright spot in the loss, as he hit a three-run homer in the first to start the scoring.

3-27-14: The New York Mets may have found their closer for the 2014 season as Jose Valverde has made the Opening Day team out of spring training camp and will be added to the 40 man roster. In nine innings this spring Valverde has allowed three runs and struck out seven batters and only walked one, on the Mets that's good enough apparently to warrant the 25 man roster spot. The Mets also re-signed Kyle Farnsworth to a deal that included a May opt out in his minor league contract after Farnsworth left the Mets looking for a Major League deal with no such luck. The Mets are still said to be interested in Stephen Drew for a one or two year deal but may wait until after Opening Day 2014 so Drew will not be eligible for another qualifying offer next season. The Mets payroll is down, and so are the expectations in New York, but they have shown products coming out of the farm system in recent years and the future may be bright in CitiField very soon.

3-20-14: The New York Mets seemed content heading into the season with a platoon of Lucas Duda and Ike Davis at first base but the Mets have recently been shopping the oft-injured Davis once again. The Mets did get some good news this week from their spring training camp and team of medical doctors as Jon Niese was cleared to begin a throwing program after his latest arm injury. The Mets need Niese, and all their arms really, with the Tommy John surgery Matt Harvey had this winter to compete and be relevant in the NL East. The Mets have been the subject of many trade rumors recently with names like Jimmy Rollins being floated around for young pitching while the hot stove is still in full swing as Stephen Drew is still available out there on the free agent market. The Mets need a shortstop, well let’s be honest the Mets have a lot of holes to fill, and New York has plenty of options to choose from at this point if they decide to go outside the organization for infield help. Noah Syndergaard, arguably the Mets best pitching prospect, was sent down to minor league camp after a strong spring camp for a little more seasoning in a move expected by most, including Syndergaard. The Mets have a below .500 record in the Grapefruit League this year but are not far behind their cross town rival New York Yankees in the standings.

3-13-14: The New York Mets have a couple new toys to show off this spring training with the additions of Bartolo Colon and Curtis Granderson to the team. The Metropolitans have a losing record this year in the Grapefruit League and sorely miss the presence of Matt Harvey around the team and especially in the starting rotation. There is plenty of young talent to get excited about in the Mets camp this year with Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee, Travis d'Arnaud, and Bobby Parnell penciled in to make the big league roster already. The Mets may not be ready to compete in the National League East just yet but they are getting close and doing it the right way building from within with their farm system.

3-5-14: New York Mets reported to spring training with several new faces along with several old faces. Last week starting pitcher John Nice headed back to New York for an MRI on his shoulder the results were negative and they displayed no damage. And other injury news it was revealed that first baseman Ike Davis hid an oblique injury from the mess the entire 2013 season. It was also reported that Matt Harvey's first throwing session went very well.

2-27-14: This week Jon Niese flew back to New York to get an MRI on his shoulder after complaining about pain in his throwing shoulder but the exam luckily found no problems meaning that Niese will be ready to go in 2014 for the New York Mets. Aside from Niese the Mets have a pretty good pitching staff including Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and the recently signed Jose Valverdes but will be without All-Star Matt Harvey who underwent Tommy John surgery last year. The addition of slugger Curtis Granderson will help David Wright as there is now another player who can provide some much needed offense at Citi Field.

1-24-14: The New York Mets have been struggling for quite some time now and hope that 2014 will finally be the year they start to turn things around even though they will be without stud pitcher Matt Harvey who underwent Tommy John surgery last year. The Mets signed Outfielder Curtis Granderson to help bolster their roster and provide some much needed offense to a small ball lineup in a ballpark that plays to his strengths as a hitter.

1-7-14: Newly acquired New York Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson said that the real baseball fans in New York route for the Mets. These might be choice parting words after leaving the Yankees via free agency or it could just be a publicity stunt to get the Mets fans revved up for this upcoming season. Either way Granderson will be wearing them at uniform alongside third baseman David Wright. It is unknown as to whether the Mets are done in terms of spending for this free agency period.

12-9-13: The New York Mets as an organization had promised their fans that by the year 2014 they would begin spending more money to build another winning team. The newest acquisition to the Mets outfield is former Yankee Curtis Granderson who signed a four-year deal worth $60 million. While with the Yankees Granderson was mainly a homerun or strikeout hitter but during his time in Detroit he was much more than that. Given the dimensions of Citi Field which like into that of the ballpark in Detroit Granderson should start using the entire field more and that will benefit the Mets greatly. Curtis Granderson has the ability to steal bases and also put pressure on defenses by taking the extra bag with his speed. The Mets also signed outfielder Chris Young Twitter one year deal. Another player on the Mets radar through free agency is outfielder Nelson Cruz. He will likely require a contract that is bigger and longer than the one that they gave to Granderson.

8-22-13: The Mets have signed Pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. Earlier in the week, Matsuzaka asked for and was granted his release from the Cleveland Indians.

8-21-13: For a team that lacks in household names the New York Mets have fared pretty decently this season so far. Despite being out of playoff contention they have competed and have won two straight games including last night's victory over the Atlanta Braves. Young pitcher Zack Wheeler got the wind pitching 6 2/3 innings giving up three runs and striking out five batters. Wheeler through 114pitches. It's a short two-game set against the Braves followed by a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers. All-Star third baseman David Wright is still on the DL but says he plans to return to the Mets this season.

8-6-13: The New York Mets continue to struggle and are now 17 games out of first place. This week they will face the Colorado Rockies at Citi Field. Third baseman David Wright continues to have a strong season batting .309 with 16 homers.

Minor leaguers Jordany Valdespin and Cesar Puello have accepted 50-game suspensions for violations of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention & Treatment Program in connection to the Biogenesis investigation.

7-18-13: The New York Mets are in fourth place and hosted the 84th annual All-Star game this past week. Their young pitching stud Matt Harvey was named the national league starting pitcher. Harvey has been sensational leading all of baseball in strikeouts. He has a record of 7– 2 and ERA of 2.35. The Mets will play the Phillies after the break.

7/7/13 - Two New York Mets have been chosen to be 2013 National League all-stars. Third baseman David Wright will start and make his second appearance, and 24-year-old rookie pitcher Matt Harvey will make his first appearance. David Wright will also be the captain of the National League home run derby team.

6/12/13 - The highlight of the season for the New York Mets may have already happened in late May when they swept the Yankees in four games. The recent demotion of Ike Davis is just a sign of where the Mets are right now. Currently in fourth place the Mets have only won 23 games and have lost 3 games in a row. The Mets are 13 games behind the first place Braves. For the second straight year, it seems that all-star third-baseman David Wright will be the lone bright spot on a roster lacking talent. This week the Mets will face the Cubs and Cardinals at Citi Field.
