More than 300 young professionals showed Dallas how to party for a cause during the Silent Disco at Candleroom, a first-time fundraiser for the Wilkinson Center.

Upon entering the nightclub, charitable attendees —including Laura Ailshire, Katie Cooke, Ryan Burris, Allison Abrahams, Julie Kim and Chris McColpin — bought gift bags filled with light-up glow glasses, necklaces and bracelets. The party swag complemented the venue itself, which was equipped with fluorescent lights and neon tape on the walls.

So how does a silent disco work? Each person received a set of headphones with three different frequencies; depending on the frequency chosen, the headphones would light up in the color that corresponded to a DJ who was spinning at that moment. Six DJs — Bryan Turner, DJ Inski, Black Market Pharmacy, Luis Sanchez, DJ Soulja and Fitz Lauder — played two sets of three.

It was called a silent disco because there was no music playing in the background when people took off their headphones. Only these Dallas YPs could come up with something so clever.

There was also a raffle that included prizes coveted by this crowd: a private party and VIP reservation at Candleroom, as well as a custom sport coat and shirt from Knot Standard. All told, the Young Friends of the Wilkinson Center raised $7,000 at this inaugural event.

The Wilkinson Center is a leading poverty rescue and prevention agency for the working poor, serving more than 14,000 people annually, mainly in East and Southeast Dallas.
