To no one’s surprise, the Nissan LEAF led US electric car sales in November, with a total of 2,687 sales. It commanded  of the electric car market in November (excluding Tesla, of course, since we don’t have Tesla numbers and “estimating” them is now just a big guessing game). Nissan also set a new November electric car sales record! No electric car has ever seen so many US sales in November.

Despite dropping 30% compared to its November 2013 sales, the Chevy Volt still managed to hold onto second place. It ended up with 1,336 sales, 16% of the market.

The BMW i3 took third (coincidentally), with 816 sales and 10% of the market. It was followed closely by the Ford Fusion Energi (752 sales / 9% of the market) and Ford C-Max Energi (644 sales / 8% of the market).

In November 2013, the LEAF had 27% of the market (2003 sales) and the Volt 26% (1920 sales). The Toyota Prius Plug-in was then third (15% / 1100 sales), and the Ford C-Max Energi and Ford Fusion Energi were fourth and fifth, respectively.

For January through November 2014, the Nissan LEAF has a commanding lead at 25,010 sales (30% of the market), followed by the Chevy Volt (15,767 sales / 19% of the market), Toyota Prius Plug-in (11,031 sales / 13% of the market), Ford Fusion Energi (10,018 sales / 12% of the market), and Ford C-Max Energi (7,249 sales / 9% of the market). Of course, the BMW i3 was introduced in the middle of the year, and sales didn’t get going for a few months (presumably because of supply issues). The Toyota Prius Plug-in was performing very well for many months, but has dropped off dramatically. It’s hard not to assume that’s a supply/production issue. However, the BMW i3 and two Ford Energi Models could simply be eating into its share of the market.

As I’ve noted previously, there seem to be 5 companies that are somewhat or very serious about selling electric cars: Nissan, BMW, Ford, GM, and (of course) Tesla. Hopefully Volkswagen and Kia (and others!) will join them, but we’ll have to wait to see.

Here are a couple of tables if you want to examine the numbers more yourself:

US EV Sales 2014 - November 1

US EV Sales 2014 - November 3

As you can see in the last two rows of that table just above, it seems the Chevy Volt has lost market share to the Ford Energi models, Toyota Prius Plug-in, and BMW i3. How much of this is due to supply, we have no idea.

    Hi Zach,
    Great article. Thanks.
We have discussed the Tesla sales numbers. I think they should be included monthly as 1/3 of their prior quarter’s sales with an asterisk explaining the methodology. I still think they should be included; any EV sales stats without Tesla are significantly incomplete, in my opinion.
A quick search just found an EV site that does exactly that: http://insideevs.com/monthly-plug-in-sales-scorecard/. Please consider. Thank you.

I was leaning towards that myself… but is the US really getting 1/3? I’m not sure.

Even if 1/3 would result in a good match, month-to-month would vary from reality wildly, while the overall picture/point would be better. (Also, I would try to base the figure off of guidance, but use historical if needed. My main concern, though, is that the US isn’t actually getting 1/3 of deliveries.)

Maybe I should just poll our readership…

Does their quarterly report break it out by region? I’ve not seen it. If not, you could do a further estimate by interpolating the sales figures by region. I think Tesla should be represented even if as a guesstimate. Eliminating Tesla from EV figures distorts the overall EV data more than an estimate, in my opinion.

        Does Teslarati.com do any estimates?

Is your list of “serious” companies just for the USA, or global? If the latter, you need to look at the Chinese makers. Kandi and Zotye are not exactly household names, which BYD is (to readers of this blog at any rate), but they are selling thousands not hundreds. Chinese government policy is very strongly supportive, so we can expect sales to grow very rapidly as charger networks are rolled out.

I emailed this to Zach earlier today. I suspect he’ll get us some info about what’s happening in China soon…

“Chinese carmakers produced ten times as many new energy vehicles last month as they did in November 2013, thanks to intense government-led promotion, according to new data.

They made a total of 9,728 green vehicles last month, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said Wednesday in a statement.”

China outproduced the rest of the world in November based on the 8,225 number above.

That’s great news. I means that EVs are growing at more than 2x than what most of us thought.

Volume up = battery costs down.

That’s the winning formula that will determine how quickly we put oil behind us.

          • Joseph Dubeau

            It’s getting there.

        • http://zacharyshahan.com/ Zachary Shahan

Thanks. We have a piece on that coming. We actually reported on those September China EV sales, by model, but I didn’t realize at the time that was probably the first time China passed the US. http://evobsession.com/china-ev-sales-charts/

          • Joseph Dubeau

            Look forward to it.

      • http://zacharyshahan.com/ Zachary Shahan

Need to get to my email.

It’s hard to find official data on China sales. I haven’t found any for model by model, mostly estimates. But, yeah, it’s quickly becoming a top, if not the top, EV market. Will try to get data out from there when we can.

    • Joseph Dubeau

The first chart – “US Plug-in Car Sales (Nov 2014 vs Nov 2013)”
      This for the US only.

      • http://zacharyshahan.com/ Zachary Shahan

I probably should have written “serious about selling electric cars in the US,” but, yeah…

    • http://zacharyshahan.com/ Zachary Shahan

      Just US, sorry.

It’s hard to find official data on China sales. I haven’t found any for model by model, mostly estimates. But, yeah, it’s quickly becoming a top, if not the top, EV market. Will try to get data out from there when we can.

Maybe someone else can join me in laughing at the irony of this, the advertisement that popped up at the top of my page for this EV sales report was for the ’15 Lincoln Navigator “warm, inviting, and incredibly spacious”, first time that I remember seeing this one, usually it’s for the Volt.
Or is the joke on me because it is coming out as a hybrid next year?

    • http://zacharyshahan.com/ Zachary Shahan

Ha. That’s Google ads for you. Serve an ad “relevant” to the content on the page.

  • Steve Grinwis

Woo! Smart electric is the third most sold BEV!

    • http://zacharyshahan.com/ Zachary Shahan

I thought of you when I saw it came in 7th overall. Maybe that article you wrote resulted in some sales ;)
