The disrupting idea behind Uber is that you can call a car as simply as pressing a button on your mobile phone.

Uber, the controversial ridesharing app, announced late this week it is expanding service along the Gulf Coast.

Customers can now order drivers in the Bradenton-Sarasota area, Ft. Myers-Naples area and Lakeland, according to an Uber email sent to drivers Thursday and Friday.

Representatives from Uber Technologies have been in Tampa since Thursday, helping and registering dozens of new drivers. Drivers gathered at a private room in the DoubleTree Tampa hotel on Friday.

Hillsborough County's public transportation commission has vocally condemned the service for avoiding the licensing traditional taxi services must have to operate legally. The county has hit drivers with fines and misdemeanor charges. Uber has compensated the drivers for the fines.
