A Cop Watcher Was Almost Killed by a Drunk Driver After Surveilling a DWI Checkpoint

Cop-watcher Kory Watkins squats and films a traffic stop in Arlington. Is this interfering?
You can't make this stuff up. Early on the morning of November 25, Kory Watkins, cop-watcher extraordinaire and face of Open Carry Tarrant County, says he was hit by a drunk driver on his way home from a cop watch. The watch's target? A DWI checkpoint.

In Watkins own words (via Facebook):

"So last night on my way home from cop watching a drunk driver was going around 100 mph and smashed into the back of me, I could not control the car , I went sideways, then flipped 3 times, hit a cement piller to stop my roll and put me in a ditch on The side of 287. I was 2 miles always from being home. I am incredible lucky to be breathing. I can't tell you how lucky I am to be alive."

The post, which has since be deleted, also included this:

"I see a few sick I individuals taken time to think this is a joke or it's funny that the cops helped me, Let me say this. I am happy the police showed up to catch him but I'm trying to figure out where they helped me any..... Was it the part where they showed up 15 minutes after the crime or was it when they wrote me a 300$ ticket after my car was totaled ? Any sick fuck that thinks this is the time to crack irony jokes can go the he'll away. I'm lucky to be alive. There are some sick people that try to take a situation and spin it to fit their beliefs when they don't know crap. Some sick people .... Mother Fucker almost dies and people are joking about it. Disgusting."

We called Watkins to make sure the post, first quoted by the Shore News Network was legit. He confirmed the first statement was his, but said he could neither "confirm nor deny" he'd made the second. He declined to comment further so as not to mess up his insurance claim.

That concern does not extend to Facebook, obviously. Monday night, Watkins took to the social network to expound on his mixed feelings about drunk driving.

"Drunk driving.

I guess I have to explain it for all the people who are claiming I support drunk driving by exposing DUI checkpoints and saying no victim, no crime when it comes to drunk driving. "Kory got what was coming to him, what comes around goes around." Hey, I know if you read this you won't fully digest it, because your brain does not have enough room for self thinking. I do not support drunk driving, I don't support a law against it either. I also don't support checkpoints that violate people's rights, because you are somehow guilty until proven innocent of drunk driving (checkpoints) I support a law against people who drive recklessly and smash into people. There was a victim in my case and that's why there was a crime. If someone goes out to eat and has a few drinks, drives home and is responsible in doing so. Nobody is hurt, no property was damaged, there is no crime. I support the freedom of travel unless you are hurting someone or their property. I do not wish anything bad against the couple that was drunk driving and almost ended my life, I hope this is a wake up call for them to be more responsible, I hope they have a speedy recovery and go back to their lives. I have no hate towards them at all."

Unlike Watkins, some people do see at least a little irony in what happened, as evidenced by this thread on Officer.com's Officers and Law Enforcement Professionals message board thread, titled: "'Cop Blocker' and Karma :) :)"

Kory makes anyone who supports the second amendment look like an idiot. I wish he could see how much damage he and his minions are causing for anyone who legally owns a gun. And yes, it is hilarious that he doesn't see the irony in this.

Somebody please pull an open records request for the officers dashcam and/or body cam of the incident. Should be pretty easy to show him in video at the checkpoint and of him at the crash. I bet he even admits to it in the video of the crash scene. Video works two ways! Post it!

Hey DO, just post audio of the interview

Since they only do DWI checkpoints on holidays, what DWI checkpoint was he at? Since November 25th isn't a holiday on my calendar, maybe the Dallas Observer needs to check the facts a little better. Or maybe Stephen Young needs a little more integrity and honesty in his stories.

Statement written by Kory Watkins :

"Sky Chadde and his pal from the Dallas Observer called me last night to answer questions about my wreck. I told them I did not want to. He asked me if I was at a DUI checkpoint the night of my wreck, I said no and they wrote that I was anyways. Then went on to make it fit their propaganda agenda for hate and slander. Pretty disgusting reporters would try to benefit from that."

Considering that Kory is a close personal friend of mine and I KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt that he, his wife, and his kids were returning home from the store, I am not sure what is more disgusting.

That the Dallas Observer would be willing to lie to an ignorant public, or that the American people stopped searching for the truth and just blindly accept whatever is told to them.

If you want to police someone, go joint the force and get paid for it.

CopBlock is to keep citizensand police accountable with a camera... imagine if in Ferguson there was a stop to finish recording of the incident. It would take all the he said she said crap and turn it into justice (either party would benefit)

Watkins should have pull out his fancy smancy long gun that he brings to rallies and substitutes for a penis, and shot the drunk driver before he crashed into him. After all, the only thing that can stop a bad guy with car and a few too many 'tinis is a good eunuch with a long gun.

Or as the founders intended, a musket that takes 10 minutes to load.

certainly ironic, and whether you agree with his actions or not, he didn't deserve this. it's sickening to see people gloating over what could have been a deadly accident.

So I went down the cop watch rabbit hole on you tube and apparently these clowns dont understand how policing work.  They think our tax dollars are being wasted bc the cops pull people over for speeding and such.  Apparently they dont realize that every department has a traffic enforcement division whose whole job is traffic laws.

Arlington is notorious for their "Safety Checkpoints" of which I have been through before, but we all know exactly what its about.  But is it really worth all the time and effort they put into it?  The one I went through had 6 cops, 2 in each lane checking licenses, insurance and inspections.  On top of that, they had numerous motorcycle cops and other police, blocking any U-turns and turn ins to neighborhood for at least a 1/2 mile back.  Then the cops they had in the parking lot, writing tickets and the towing companies towing cars with no insurance.

There are no such thing as DWI checkpoints in Texas, there are safety checkpoints and they do them day and night, weekdays and weekends in Arlington. There are no refusal holidays and there was one from Saturday before thanksgiving to the Sunday after

@monkeypuncher All reporters get every story wrong.

The next time you are reading a story, remember what happened here.  It wasn't an exception -- it's the rule.

Reporters always get it wrong.

You like using the term "apparently" a lot.

You "apparently" forgot to research what happened to Kory Watkins for yourself, as you would realize that he was on his way home from the store with his wife and children when he was hit by a drunk driver.

The author of this article is filling in the blanks with fairy tales in order to make the story fit his agenda.

Kory Watkins was NOT at a DUI checkpoint, nor returning from one

@ScottsMerkin That doesn't make any sense.  They could have a Department of Porn Watching and Masturbation, but it's still a waste of tax dollars to have cops sitting around watching porn and whacking it.

@monkeypuncher So he lied on his facebook page? I mean, here is his quote....

"So last night on my way home from cop watching a drunk driver was going around 100 mph and smashed into the back of me, I could not control the car , I went sideways, then flipped 3 times, hit a cement piller to stop my roll and put me in a ditch on The side of 287. ScottsMerkin
ScottsMerkin topcommenter

@everlastingphelps ok phelps, way to be an idiot.  but they arent charged with watching porn, they are charged with enforcing traffic laws.  And while I believe that the 35 mph speed limit on a 6 lane road is beyond dumb, artificially low and set to make it easy to be caught speeding, they arent the ones who set the limit.

StarBuster
StarBuster

They are about saving lives not revenue. Second officers do not set fines. The city doesn't set fines. The judge does.

everlastingphelps
everlastingphelps topcommenter

@StarBuster Then they are doing a shitty job.  Get out on patrol and find the drunk drivers instead of sitting on their asses harassing innocent citizens in the hopes that the drunks will come to them.

StarBuster
StarBuster

You should know that most officers do not get overtime they get comp time. Plus they don't fall under the normal 40hr 7 day work week. They are exempt from those laws. They can have up to 184hrs in 28 days before any overtime or comp time applies. So they could be forced to work 80hrs in one week and still not get overtime as long as the supervisors cuts them time off before the end of the 28 day pay period.

holmantx
holmantx topcommenter

@everlastingphelps @holmantx @ScottsMerkin

Now that's an ugly thing to say!

Like any perpetual motion machine, the cost to produce revenue must be surpassed by the revenue generated.  That includes a little overtime grease,

Otherwise we'll find our crime fighters in the same boat the BATF was in, having film an assault on a Branch Davidian Mt. Carmel compound as a publicity stunt in hopes of garnering their fair share of the finite law enforcement revenue pie.

What's next?  Seizing property on arrest then selling it for funding even if the charges are dismissed?

Who's gonna pay for the car wrecks while texting on the way to give a 'public' speech?

You're too hard, man.

@everlastingphelps @ScottsMerkin To carry it even further, a citizen-led 'Whack Watch' isn't going to do much to end the Porn and Masturbation Dept.  It would probably rake in great revenue on the internet, however.

You get Scott's point, I know you do.  If you want to end the wasteful, frivolous enforcement of stupid laws, repeal the laws.

ScottsMerkin
ScottsMerkin topcommenter

@everlastingphelps you are purposefully misstating my position.  You know damn well traffic enforcement is standard in police departments across the country.  Im not saying they dont do things that waste tax dollars, but I dont really want people going 60 in 30 in my neighborhood or blasting through red lights and stop signs.  But if you want to defend cop block, feel free

StarBuster
StarBuster

Checkpoints are the safest and very effective at not only catching impaired drivers but to let impaired drivers know that they can get caught. The checkpoints keep supervisors on staff and backup is seconds away. The checkpoints are in a safe area and offer the officer and impaired driver the most safety. A traffic stop on the side of the road is a danger to the officer, the driver and passing motorist. Plus a person probably like you would say that officers shouldn't be stopping cars for weaving or a tag light when they should be stopping killers. So no matter what the officers will be wrong in your eyes. - feel free to put in an application and walk the walk.

ScottsMerkin
ScottsMerkin topcommenter

@everlastingphelps @StarBuster I can support cops and still admit, a lot of what they are told to do/enforce is about revenue generation.  Prime example,  an Arlington cop pulled me over for going 7 over the speed limit, asked why I was speeding, told me to slow down and let me go.  That was to try and make the city safer.

A Pantego officer, pulls my wife over for going 3 mph over the limit (not a school zone) and this was the interaction.  "License and insurance ma'am, Thank you.  Do you have any guns, drugs or anything illegal in the car I need to know about"  No she answers.  3 minutes later he comes back "Ma'am sign here please, this is not an admission of guilt, just verifying that you received notice of your court date 2 weeks from today, Thank you and have a nice day"

everlastingphelps
everlastingphelps topcommenter

@StarBuster Then why does the city budget include millions of dollars for police overtime?

Arlington, the specific PD in this article, does in fact pay overtime.

http://www.arlingtontx.gov/pdf/police_management_study.pdf

In January of 2002 the Chief advanced a “100 day plan” to focus on 2001 trends of increased response time with no corresponding increase in calls for service; an increase in crime, overtime, and time spent on calls with no corresponding increase in clearance rates.

"What's next?  Seizing property on arrest then selling it for funding even if the charges are dismissed?"

Pretty sure thats standard procedure here in Texas now, I think there was even a story or 2 here on UP about some smaller texas towns, confiscating cash, even small sums saying they believed they were being used for illegal purposes.

everlastingphelps

@StarBuster Fuck safety.  Who grows up saying, "I want to be a cop so I'll have a safe job?"

Checkpoints don't catch drunk drivers.  The simply don't work as well as patrols.  Any cop who picks his own personal safety over that of the People should turn in his badge.  That's not a hero, despite what cops like to flatter themselves with.

http://ktar.com/6/673539/Study-Says-DUI-Checkpoints-Ineffective

Checkpoints don't catch drunks and they don't reduce fatalities.  That means that the cops are shifting the danger from themselves (in the side of the road) to the general population (in increased DUI deaths.)  Real fucking noble, "hero."

Put in an application?  No thanks, I'll stick with the real danger and reward, not wearing a badge.

StarBuster

Scott, sadly the first officer could be later claimed to be given xyz group of people breaks. Or perhaps he was just fishing for a bigger violation. It's quicker to give a warning and move on to perhaps a drunk driver or stolen car. The second officer probably gives everybody a robot response and a ticket as this Completly avoids any chance of Eric Holder investigating him for give xyz group a warning and targets abc group for tickets. Plus many Officers have zero method of knowing if the driver has ever been given a warning. The second officer may had been assigned to a traffic team and the first officer may had been on a DUI task force.

StarBuster
StarBuster

I said most agencies don't cover overtime with increased pay. Officers and fireman are exempt from the standard 40hrs 7 day overtime rule. In many large agencies they can offer comp time which must be accounted for but doesn't increase the officers pay check. Btw your pulling up a 13 year old quote.

@StarBuster Here's a 1 year quote:

http://www.arlingtontx.gov/budget/pdf/proposed_operatingbudget_FY2013.pdf

P149, they note a 10% reduction in police overtime.  How do you reduce overtime you aren't paying?

Face it.  You're wrong, and you're peddling bullshit on purpose.  In your own denial, you admit that they pay overtime when you exceed 184hrs/28dys.  That's a 46 hour workweek before you hit overtime.

Cops get paid.  Cops get paid well.  Cops get overtime.  Cops get lots of overtime, and overtime is a significant part of the city budget everywhere, especially when they can point a Federal grant at it (like with DUI checkpoints.)

StarBuster
StarBuster

Plenty of cities and state agencies do not offer overtime with extra pay. Many take advantage of compensation of hours. Instead of earning extra pay for overtime they officer gets to bank or build up hours that he can take off later. Plus officers are exempt from the 40hr 7 day work period. An officer could work 80hrs in 7 days and still not rate any overtime provided they are in a 14 or more day pay period and the staff adjust the officers hours to avoid giving the overtime.

FYI- officers in my area make about 12-15hr. That's about what a zone manager at Wal-mart earns.
