Allison Lum, the head of Honolulu real estate firm Plum Associates, was named the Honolulu Board of Realtors' Realtor of the Year Friday.
The announcement was made during the board's annual winter meeting at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort.
Rochelle Lee Gregson, the CEO of the Honolulu Board of Realtors (HBR), said that Lum was chosen Realtor of the Year based on her community involvement, as well as her involvement with the Board of Realtors.
Lum also introduced board members to Real Property Resource, computer software that lets Realtors produce reports based on MLS statistics, and provided training to members, Gregson said.
The selection was made by former Realtors of the Year and is not based on sales, Gregson said.
Lum's acceptance speech had the audience of about 1,300 Realtors in stitches: "I was asked to say a few words," she said at the podium. "So, 'A few words, the end.' Thank you!"
Lum told PBN her mother founded the firm almost three decades ago. She said the best advice she can give fellow Realtors is to remember that they can become experts on homes and neighborhoods at any time, but it's important to get out and study the market.
Also during the meeting, incoming HBR president Jack Legal, of Legal Realty—taking the reins from outgoing president Julie Meier—addressed the need for Realtors to counter the challenge presented by online real estate search apps by offering superior service to remain relevant to clients.
