Gwyneth Paltrow was in town Thursday for the grand opening of Goop Pop, her get-it-while-it-lasts lifestyle store in Highland Park Village. Before the kick-off party, FD fashion editor Bradley Agather Means chatted with the retailing actress at the temporary shop — it offers Paltrow-approved fashion and home decor, only through December 14 — getting the scoop on why Dallas was chosen (and the thing inside the store with which she is “obsessed”).
BRADLEY AGATHER MEANS: I have been a fan of yours for as long as I can remember. Your cookbook was one of the first that I read cover to cover! So, why Dallas for the Goop pop-up shop? Have you been to Dallas before?
GWYNETH PALTROW: Outside of my first work in California as an actress, my first real movie job was in Texas [for Flesh and Bone, 1993, with Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid]. I really fell in love with it. I’ve always felt this weird, secret kinship to Texas. It is also one of our strongest markets — Dallas — for the website. After our first pop-up in Los Angeles, I thought, I’d love to go somewhere that’s not New York City next, you know, be a little unexpected — somewhere where we would have fans who would want us to come.
BAM: So, I have this whole mindset, WWGG, What Would Gwyneth Give, so I’m curious, can you tell me about a couple of things in the store that are perfect gifts for friends?
GP: I’m obsessed with monograms. If you give something monogrammed it’s the nicest, most personal way because it says “I thought about you six weeks ago.” It could even be a canvas bag that’s $20, but if you put their initials on it, it is so nice! Flannel PJs are perfect for the winter and you can get them monogrammed. Anything with a monogram gives a personal touch.
BAM: Goop is monogramming them in-store, right?
GP: Yes! That’s been my dream! I said, “Please, can we do it in-store?”
BAM: The Goop store has local touches: Taylor Tomasi Hill, a Highland Park native, doing the florals, and then the space itself, designed by Dallas decorator Michelle Nussbaumer of Ceylon et Cie. How did you and Michelle collaborate?
GP: It was all via phone and email! I’ve always been a fan of Michelle’s work. I love her mix, and she just killed it. I’m so obsessed with the wallpaper!
