Happy, Crappy Elves

Happy, Crappy Elves

By Jennifer Davis-Lamm

In the dark underbelly of the North Pole lives a legion of elves deeply, deeply dissatisfied with their lot in life. They’ve let themselves go — bulbous bellies poke out from under their elf apparel, unseemly hair pokes out from their trademark ears and their complexions have undertones of “don’t give a rat’s ass.” It’s a sad state of affairs, but it can’t be wholly unexpected from a group of people who have been force-fed cheer whilst working fingers to the bones to provide toys for an increasingly demanding populace. Artist Brian Keith Jones captures the struggle of this downtrodden community in his “Crappity Elves” series — a raw look at the downside of the yuletide. His portraits of these unkempt elves will be on display at the Ro2 Art Gallery, 110 N. Akard St., in a place that most aptly captures their struggle — the bathroom. The pieces will be on sale as will a special set of Christmas cards that pay homage to the crappity little guys. The free exhibition will be on Friday, December 5 from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m.; see ro2art.com for more.
