Garret Yoshimi has been named vice president for information technology and chief information officer of the University of Hawaii System, a position previously held by university President David Lassner.

As CIO for the university, Yoshimi will have oversight over technological services delivered to all campuses statewide.

Yoshimi's past six-year experience at UH under the direction of Lassner as telecommunications manager and later as director of technology infrastructure will be helpful at this new position, he told PBN.

"The challenge for me will be to quickly re-engage with the community and figure out what's been going on in the six years since I left," Yoshimi said. "I'm particularly interested in looking at how to leverage what we can gain from various data already collected within the system to deliver benefits back to that community."

Yoshimi says he plans to ensure that the university's system supports student registration, course delivery, and learning management, by improving things such as online student dashboards to deliver information to faculty and students alike.

"One of the great things about the higher education community in general is that we were really good at sharing experiences and working collaboratively across institutions…especially when you apply technology that we can deliver to the communities," he added.

In addition to his experience at the university, Yoshimi has served as vice president and chief operating officer for the Honolulu-based eWorld Enterprise Solutions, and as CIO for the Hawaii Judiciary. He also has worked as the senior technology executive for the East-West Center and CIO for DTRIC Insurance.

Yoshimi will begin his new job on Jan. 5.
