Friday

There’s no telling what Ryan Adams we’ll see at SMU’s McFarlin Auditorium this evening. The singer-songwriter has a knack for controversy that separates him from many of his better-behaved peers, and it’s cast him as a somewhat polarizing figure. He’s always had a strong bastion of support among the SMU crowd however, as he’s somewhat of a poet laureate for plaid-shirted beer guzzlers. Whatever he does, expect it to be interesting. That’s at 7 this evening.

Christmas is still 20 days away, and I can’t tell if that seems close or very far away, but I can tell you that the celebrations are already in full swing. One such example is Talulah Belle’s ambitious Lightup Lakewood event which features everything from a choir to a petting zoo. I hope there are no reindeer because that always kind of bums me out. That’s from 6 pm until 9 pm tonight.

Oil and Cotton will be relocating its current space in Spring of 2015, which will see the innovative creative commons entity sharing real estate with Davis Street Espresso and Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters. A preview of the new space will take place both this evening (6 pm-10 pm) and for most of Saturday (10 am-6pm). Drinks will be served, but more importantly, a singular collection of diverse work from local artists and merchants will be available for purchase, and you can see a list of participants by going here.

Saturday

One Arts Plaza will also be getting in the spirit this weekend with a celebration that will take over the ever-dynamic block, an event called One Arts Holiday. Hot toddies, Irish coffees, and margaritas will be served at Tei-An, Jorge’s, and Proof + Pantry, and I’ll leave it to you to sort out who specializes in what because that’s part of the fun. No word on whether or not 7-11 is participating.

One of the highlights of the recent Untapped Fest, Blackalicious, will be appearing at the Granada tonight, and of course, it’s always better to see your favorite band in an enclosed space, but especially hip hop acts. That’s at 7 this evening.

Sunday

Finally, consider spending an afternoon absorbing Dallas Theater Center’s take on A Christmas Carol. According to our critic, Lindsey Wilson, this year’s version is much more streamlined and wonderfully aided by the addition of musical elements from various members of local band, Home by Hovercraft. See Wilson’s review by going here.
