La Mexicana

La Mexicana’s overall taco quality is difficult to evaluate. It is one of Denton’s few authentic Mexican sit-down restaurants, which means its menu is more expansive than the other taquerias we’ve visited in the city.

Its tacos are served lightly oiled tortillas and topped with cilantro and chopped onion, and of the six tacos I ordered four hit the mark.

The beef fajita taco had a nice smoky flavor that serves as the signature for this usual favorite. The carnitas filling was tender and well-seasoned. Whether the carnitas were prepared in the traditional manner, it is definitely La Mexicana’s best taco.

La Mexicana’s tacos al pastor are not from a trompo. Instead, they are filled with small chunks of pulled pork. At first felt a bit deceived, but my taste buds were plenty satisfied with the savory pork. This cut was not overly moist, but it also wasn’t dry.

The taco I enjoyed eating the most was the chicken taco. It packed a thoroughly bold taste. In all honesty, it was the only taco that made a strong impression on my palate. It wasn’t the tastiest, but it had a presence about it that you really have to taste in order to understand it.

The other two tacos I tried were a bean and cheese taco and a carne asada taco. Unfortunately, they both lacked any kind of significant taste. It’s safe to say that La Mexicana’s menu could do without these two, though the asada can certainly be improved.
