Agency Provides Internet Link to Propane Refueling Sites & Safety Tips
for “Snowbirds” Flocking to the Lone Star State

AUSTIN –– The Texas Railroad Commission’s web site has a new feature for Winter Texans – or “snowbirds” – who have begun their annual migration to the Lone Star State, and who plan to keep their nests cozy and warm with Texas-produced propane gas.

The Railroad Commission, the state’s chief energy agency, is in charge of propane safety in Texas.

At http://altenergy.rrc.state.tx.us/Tips_for_Winter_Texans, visitors can call up a directory of more than 900 places to buy propane fuel statewide. The directory is searchable by city, county or company name. The site also has tips and checklists covering the safe storage, handling and use of propane containers, appliances and piping systems in recreational vehicles and campers. In addition, the site has links to information about current road and weather conditions and state historic sites.

For those who use propane to power their vehicles, the site also has information on claiming the 50 cents per gallon federal alternative motor fuel tax credit.

“This web site is our way of welcoming Winter Texans and helping to make their stay easy and enjoyable,” said Railroad Commission Chairman Elizabeth Ames Jones. “Everything travelers need to know about propane is here under one virtual roof.”

Railroad Commissioner David Porter said, “When it comes to propane, safety is our top priority. We encourage Winter Texans to visit our web site for tips on the safe use of their recreational propane appliances.”

Commissioner Barry T. Smitherman said, “Whether you’re a Winter Texan or a year-round resident, the Commission’s web site is your headquarters for information on propane safety—at home, at work, and at play. Check it out.”

The Texas Railroad Commission reminds those who rely on propane-powered camp heaters, lanterns and stoves or who drive recreational vehicles (RVs) to follow some basic outdoor equipment safety rules, which include:

• Always store, move and use propane storage cylinders in an upright position, unless otherwise indicated on the cylinder itself. Cylinders and appliances should be kept out of reach of children at all times.
• Campground owners with propane tanks on their property should contact their local supplier to have their propane delivery account put on automatic. That way, they will never have to worry about running out of fuel, no matter how cold the weather gets or how treacherous the roads become for propane delivery trucks.
• Quite a few Winter Texans travel by RV during this season. The Railroad Commission reminds these vehicle owners that now is a good time to take the RV to a qualified propane gas dealer or licensed RV repair facility for a checkup. The propane supplier or facility repair technician can check the system for leaks and proper regulator settings; inspect the valves and fittings; and check propane tanks for rust and dents.
