Even though there's football on every day of the week, you should probably peel yourself away from the TV and get a little culture now and then. Unfortunately, tickets to the theatre and opera can be prohibitively expensive. That is, of course, unless you know where to look.

This week, you can attend five visual art, literature, and theater events that cost less than you'd spend on one of those fancy craft cocktails. Take a little bit of your drinking money and put it toward checking out the crazy (and occasionally psychedelic) art of Dr. Seuss, a lecture on one of history's most bad-ass women, or picking up some really great vintage junk. Your liver will thank you for it.

The Art of Dr. Seuss
Milan Gallery, Fort Worth
November 8-24, 2014
Tickets: free

Of course you're familiar with the whimsical landscapes that Theodore Geisel produced in the children's books that you grew up with, but most of us don't realize that Dr. Seuss was also a relatively prolific visual artist. Throughout his career as one of the most beloved authors of all time, Geisel painted and sculpted when he needed a burst of creativity, but the works were kept secret at his estate until very recently. The Milan Gallery in Fort Worth's exhibition will feature prints and sculptures that exemplify his whimsical spirit and reestablish that the beloved Dr. Seuss was more than just an author.

The Complete Works of Shakespeare: The Two Gentlemen of Verona
Dee & Charles Wyly Theatre, Dallas
Monday, Nov. 10
Tickets: $10, discounted for students.

Shakespeare Dallas' noble pursuit of performing the Complete Works of Shakespeare continues at the AT&T Performing Arts Center's Wyly Theatre on Monday, October 10. The Two Gentlemen of Verona is considered by some historians to be the playwright's first work, composed sometime between 1589 and 1592. There's no denying that Shakespeare really came into his own later in his career, but Shakespeare Dallas' wildly talented company is enough to take this arguably mediocre comedy to a truly hilarious level.

Ruchama King Fuerman Reading "In The Courtyard of the Kabbalist"
Jewish Community Center of Dallas
Tuesday, November 11
Tickets: $10 in advance, $12 at the door

Ruchama King Feuerman is one of the most critically-acclaimed Jewish writers of the last several years, leading some to describe her as the "Jewish Jane Austen." Feuerman's latest novel, In The Courtyard of the Kabbalist, delicately explores the relationship always-tenuous state of Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs, and was a 2013 National Jewish Book Award finalist. The author will be at the Jewish Community Center of Dallas on Tuesday to discuss the novel as part of the Center's celebration of Margot Rosenberg Pulitzer Jewish Book Fest.

2014 Dallas Vintage Clothing & Jewelry Show
Addison Conference Center
November 15-16, 2014
Tickets: $10 for Saturday & Sunday

The Dallas Vintage Clothing & Jewelry Show is the weekend home for some of the city's best vintage curators to display their eccentric collections. Vintage designer goods, costume jewelry, home decor, and other tchotchkes will be aplenty, and typically at very affordable prices. More upscale items will certainly be on offer, but you'll likely be able to curate an entire authentic vintage wardrobe without paying boutique prices.

Authors Live: Presenting Kathryn Harrison
Highland Park United Methodist Church
November 13, 2014

Joan Of Arc is one of those historical figures that continues to captivate the interest of history nerds of any age. Author Kathryn Harrison has explored a diverse range of topics as a writer, but according to the critics, this biography of Joan of Arc may be one of her best. The Highland Park United Methodist Church's Authors Live series, presented in conjunction with the Friends of SMU Library, has continually been able to attract nationally prominent authors to their reading series, and Harrison is a particularly good score for history buffs and fans of a great narrative.
