NPR National Desk Correspondent Ina Jaffe was honored for her investigation into the Veterans Affairs' use of a coveted plot of land in Los Angeles designated as housing for homeless veterans.

Jaffe learned that, not only has the VA failed to act on plans announced in 2007 to rehab buildings for veterans' housing needs, but it has instead rented out some of the land and buildings to commercial enterprises, despite prohibitive Congressional measures.

It was estimated that the VA has taken in at least $28 million and possibly more than $40 million over the past 12 years through the outside rental agreements.

Combining on-air and online elements into a multimedia documentary, Lost And Found: Discover A Black-And-White Era In Full Color tells the story of 1930s-era hobbyist photographer Charles W. Cushman and his archive of more than 14,000 photos spanning three decades. His vast body of work was discovered recently, rather by accident. In an era of black and white photography, Cushman took one of the first known color photos: a shot of the freshly painted Golden Gate Bridge.

In the process of telling Cushman's story, Multimedia Producer Claire O'Neill was joined by Designer Wes Lindamood to create a customized storytelling platform built to showcase Cushman's compelling life through the very images that defined it. Read more about the process of developing this special storytelling platform.

In addition to three 2013 Eyes of History Awards, this project took third place in the prestigious World Press Multimedia competition, honorable mention in the National Press Photographers Association's Best of Photojournalism contest and a silver medal in Best of Digital Design from the Society for News Design.
