Busking with The Voice Star Melanie Martinez

Melanie Martinez busked around Dallas when she visited town last month

Oftentimes when we feature an artist on the ongoing Globe Trek Productions busking series, it's someone who's local or whom at least has ties to Texas. That could mean local rapper Blue, the Misfit, or it could mean Austin-based singer-songwriter Slaid Cleaves. But sometimes, as with our most recent episode with the Jayhawks, these videos are just a fun excuse to sit in on an informal jam with artists who are passing through town.

That's exactly what we get this time around with New York-based singer Melanie Martinez. She was in town last month for an appearance at House of Blues, and on the day of the show Casey Carr and his team got her to busk around the streets of West End.

Martinez, who looks quite the part of the busker in he video with her splashes of colorful hair, pink tutu and rabbit ears, made a name for herself a few years ago but featuring on NBC TV show The Voice. (That show, coincidentally, has gone on to feature several artists who do have local ties in Texas, including no fewer than four singers this past season.) As she discusses at the beginning of the video, the 19-year-old singer's music has also been featured on American Horror Story. "It's my favorite show, I watch every episode," she explains.

One of the two songs that Martinez performs in the video is "Carousel," the very same song which was featured on American Horror Story. ("I only found out two days before it aired," she recalls.) The other is "Dollhouse," the title track to her debut EP which was released earlier this year.
