It’s time for another Windows Phone statistics report. The trend continues – while we see the news about hi-end Windows Phones, it’s the lower end devices that make the biggest gains and move the ecosystem forward. This month is not an exception, but there are still some gems and surprises in the data. Read on to learn more.
Data source
This report is based on data collected from 2,499 Windows Phone apps running AdDuplex SDK v.2. The raw data analyzed was collected over the day of December 27th, 2013 (UTC time) unless otherwise stated. We have made every attempt to consolidate different reported phone model names under their canonical retail model names, but it is possible that some of the rare model name variations were not accounted for.
Worldwide stats
Lumia 520 is the indisputable leader of the Windows Phone world and every month makes its position stronger and stronger. This month it crossed the 30% mark and combined with 521 now owns more than one third of the total Windows Phone market. The only other notable change this month is Lumia 625 going from no.10 to no.8 (2.9% to 4.5%).
While low end is growing rapidly and is mostly responsible for all the global market share gains, the new flagships (Lumia 1020 and 1520) still fail to show up in the top 10. And even if we take the Windows Phone 8 devices only, the expensive newbies are nowhere to be seen in the top 10 chart.
Lumia 520, on the other hand, commands almost 40% of the WP8 market (close to 44% if combined with 521).
That said Lumia 1020 did move from number 13 to number 11 this month, displacing both Lumia 822 and Samsung ATIV S in the chart. Lumia 1520 moved from #19 to #16.
It is no surprise that Nokia is still number one Windows Phone manufacturer in the world and it gained another 2.1% this month for a total of 92.1%.
On the OS side we are now firmly behind the 3/4 on the WP8 line and, hopefully, will get to 4/5 next month.
United States
We have a new number 2 in the US and that’s the global leader – Lumia 520. Therefore, the share of Lumia 52x devices in US is now pretty much aligned with global situation. It’s notable that L520 has jumped 3 places in just one month and that is, most likely, the result of the aggressive pricing we’ve seen recently.
Another notable fact about US is that T-Mobile is the new number 2 Windows Phone 8 operator in the country with 23.3% of the market. We will see if Verizon is able to come back next month when, hopefully, their new Windows Phone flagship is out. But, if history is any indication, it is the low end that drives the market share. So it is more likely that we won’t see any major changes in the lineup next month.
Spain
Spain is an odd country for Windows Phone. While its neighbors are the European strongholds of WP it never really took off in Spain. But it looks like it could change soon just from looking at the current chart. Lumia 520 has easily dwarfed the former leaders and quite a few WP8 models are well represented in the chart. It will be really interesting to see if Windows Phone manages to make meaningful gains in the country.
Poland
Unlike Spain, Poland has been one of the first markets where Windows Phone managed to get into “double digits”. An interesting observation Poland is that Lumia 920 didn’t even register in the top 10 in September, but now it’s in the fourth spot with close to 10% share. Lumia 625 is doing well too.
Finland
Finland is obviously a special country for Windows Phone and an odd one at that. Lumia 800 is still the number one Windows Phone in Finland (was there a huge giveaway of leftover stock there?). It’s all Lumias in the top 10 and in pretty random order.
Russia
Not much has changed in Russia since we last looked at it in September. Some old phones dropped out of top 10 while some new ones (L625 and L925) entered it.
China
Lumia 925 has almost doubled its share in China since September, but other than that, there aren’t that many changes.
Indonesia
Indonesia is in line with global trends – Lumia 520 at the top and the rest of the chart lined up almost by price.
Brazil
Last time we looked at Brazil just 2 months ago, Lumia 710 was still a strong number one, leading by almost 9% compared to L520 in the second spot. And that was a slightly troubling view. But 2 months later the situation has more than flipped. Not only Lumia 520 is the new leader, but the lead is by almost 10%. That’s a very good sign for a market that was already good to Windows Phone.
