Renewable Energy for Everyone

Denton Municipal Electric is committed to providing cost-effective, environmentally friendly electric service to its customers. To fulfill this commitment, DME has entered into a multi-year power purchase agreement to purchase renewable energy from FPL Energy’s subsidiary, NextEra Energy Power Marketing, LLC (“NextEra”). Next Era owns and operates the Wolf Ridge Wind Farm located northwest of Muenster, Texas. On May 1, 2009, NextEra began selling green energy to DME to supply its customers’ long-term power needs and meet the utility’s renewable energy objectives.

This agreement provides DME with approximately 40% of its energy portfolio on an average yearly basis. Renewable Energy Credits purchased through this contract will be directed to the EarthEra™ Renewable Energy Trust (the “Trust”). NextEra Energy Resources created the EarthEra initiative as a vehicle for consumers and corporations to join together to help fight climate change by increasing our nation's supply of renewable energy. The Trust directs 100% of all funds from the sale of EarthEra products and services toward the development and construction of new renewable energy facilities, such as wind and solar, across the nation.

DME also receives renewable energy from the landfill to gas energy project located at the City of Denton landfill, which is operated by DTE Energy. This project provides 1.6 megawatts of renewable energy to DME, which can provide electricity for up to 1,600 homes.
