Battleground Texas launched in January 2013 with the goal of turning reliably red Texas into — at minimum — a purple state where Democrats could compete. But nearly two years later, on the day after the 2014 general election, Texas looks redder than ever.

In my opinion, Texas Democrats made two mistakes in the Gubernatorial campaign. Letitia Van de Putte should have run for governor, and they should have emphasized the marijuana policy reform plank in their platform. In every state where marijuana policy reform is on the ballot, they see a huge outpouring of younger voters that never would have voted otherwise. The Texas Democratic Party has endorsed reform, they should have made a bigger deal of it. As for the Gubernatorial candidate, too many people outside Travis County knew only one thing about Wendy Davis, "Abortion Barbie". Here are some suggestions. I admire Wendy Davis, but it might not have been the best idea to nominate a modern urban woman after 20 years of old white men being in charge. The electorate is simply not ready for it.
Going forward, suggestions are the following.
Speak to older white voters who are poor and disenfranchised but voting republican with a 'come home to the democratic party' speech. They used to vote democratic and no longer do, because they have been distracted by republicans citing liberal social issues. Remind them, particularly in East Texas, that their parents and grandparents and presumably they themselves used to vote economic self interest and can do so again.
Speak to suburban parents about issues that make a difference to them. It is a careful balance of stressing education, but not necessarily increasing spending. Plainly label conservative nut job ideas that middle class suburban parents would not like.
Continue to speak to urban liberals, but carefully note that they must be willing to compromise to achieve power and influence.
Continue to speak to blacks and latinos on the need for equal opportunities for all.
And whatever is done, for pete's sake, keep an eye on the 2020 census and the resulting redistricting; the state legislature must be made more competitive and more representative of all the people of Texas. Spend lots of money and time with good candidates for this goal.

The problem is people bitch and moan about how their Govenment treats them but won't get off thier asses to do anything about it. I've lost track of how many times I've heard "elections don't matter" this year. Well when only 33% of registered voters, roughly 12% of all voting aged adults, cast a ballot that become a self fulfilling prophecy. Elections will never matter as long as the angriest 12% of the voting age population in the state are making all of our decisions based on fear and ignorance.

Republicans know how to drive the message with only a few wedge issues, defining others for them. Democrats have forgotten how to concentrate on battling for the common person and define themselves for the electorate. Shotgunning a large number of issues, many of which are divisive and don't affect the average voter, will always be a losing strategy. Get back to basics and get the message out, and watch that change.

The deluded radical leftists of ACORN (aka Battleground Texas), most of whom aren't even Texans, preached to their choir for two years and now all of a sudden they just can't figure out how or why their message didn't resonate with Texans? It's because they know little or nothing of Texas outside the Austin city limits. It's because they repeat the same old tired liberal propaganda to each other to the point that they collectively began to believe fairy tales like Wendy from Rhode Island moving into the Governors Mansion next January. I'm very grateful to Battleground Texas for mobilizing so many Democrats. Now we/they need to rethink their strategy and refine it. That's not such a big deal. They have to find ways to make a clear statement of the mission of Democratic candidates, but the biggest hurdle I can see are the widespread lies told by Republicans at all levels, especially the lies that tend to scare people. A man I respect told me this morning that Wendy Davis had two abortions and lied about it so he couldn't support her. That's not true, is it? The Right Wing Radio shows in Rural Areas drives a 75 percent Republican vote which wins at a state level. Using the internet to get the counter message out is just not enough. I can best describe the effort of Battleground Texas to help Democrats in the Lone Star State with an analogy about an 18-wheeler that gets stuck under an overpass in Texas.
A dozen or so Democratic consultants, community organizers, campaign coordinators, handlers and schedulers arrive on the scene of a tractor-trailer stuck under an overpass and start to devise a plan to remove the rig. At their behest, workers scale the side of the truck with cutting torches, stage on top of the overpass and begin melting and carving the metal shell of the large trailer compartment, working in earnest as their Democratic supervisors point and direct them to focus on different areas. Crews begin to use sledge hammers to demolish portions of the overpass, to try to free the cab wedged into the concrete. After several hours, a Republican arrives on the scene, studies the crews and the truck for a minute, retrieves a ball-point pen from his lapel, unscrews the cap off one of the back tires of the rig and starts letting the air out. As he methodically makes his way from tire to tire, the Democratic consultants, community organizers, campaign coordinators, handlers and schedulers begin to holler at the crews to work faster. They even start verbally-attacking the Republican who, without flinching, continues to let the air out of each tire. After he completes his task, the Republican announces to the Democratic consultants, community organizers, campaign coordinators, handlers and schedulers that the 18-wheeler is no longer wedged under the overpass. The Republican then gets in his pickup and drives away.

Stop blaming election ID laws when other states have voter ID laws. I personally want to know who is voting. You have to have an ID for practically everything else. That law will get turned over on appeal and was only ruled unconstitutional by an Obama crony.
Battleground Texas just needs to face reality. This state is not nor will it become purple or blue. Even the assumption that Hispanics are automatic Democrats is not true. Abbott received 44% of the Hispanic vote overall and 50% of the male Hispanic vote.

Typical of the wholly-owned media you seek to blame people working on the problem and completely ignore the obvious. Texas doesn't have a special stupidity problem it has a huge information gap which the Tribune at times does seek to close but at other times ignores to keep it's funds flowing. Battleground said from the start that it was a multi-year effort and they have done good works so far. Democrats had exceptionally good candidates at the top of the ticket.
So to what should we attribute this Republican victory? First, look at that chronic, ongoing information gap. Second analyze all the legal and dark money that flowed into vicious, lying attack ads. They don't so much direct voters as to whom to vote for as they turn them off from even voting at all. But, oh no, media won't talk about that because they directly benefit from that money. Now look at the voter suppression laws which act exactly as the ads do. Faced with a hassle people won't even attempt to vote. Next look at the gerrymandering. Finally ask about the the vote-counting machinery of the state which has also been privatized in the hands of conservative-owned vendors.

Battleground Texas, is nonsense, you can not call a typically red state a battleground state. This state has never been a battleground. This state has voted for valued that go beyond political party. When parties switched their platform, Texas switched. Texas values, Texas strong. #1 in the economy. We do not need to be broke. Some people want to turn this State into a liberal wasteland. No thanks, keep Texas values with Texans! Even with the influx of liberals moving here for jobs that their states do not have! Due to failed liberal policies. Texas is strong even on its weakest day. Let's keep Texas like it is, too bad liberals can not see that strength from self is better than weakness from government.

It is ironic to see people still claiming this years effort was better than ever before, when that was just proven not true. Talk to anyone inside the Democratic Party across the state and ask if the coordination was great. My only hope is that now that BGTX knows they need the Democratic Party, they attempt to include it. But better yet, lets get serious about building our infrastructure where it belongs, inside the Democratic party. News flash 2010 was bad year too. And there is no reason we should be building the plane while its on the runway, or a reason why we had to re-learn the lessons learned in 2010.
