Despite the racket that it conjures up, it’s the very definition of “joyful noise”—a spirited rat-a-tat that elicits a smile with every shuffle-step. And it’s worth noting that the art form behind the cheerful hoofing has a storied history, blending cultures from Africa to the Netherlands to Ireland. Those influences came together on the streets of New York in the early 20th century and then floated up the vaudeville circuit to Broadway to cinema. “Legends Never Die” takes a trip through tap-dancing’s backstory, with traditional and modern numbers that recall and recreate famous musical scenes and tap-dancing legends. Rhythm dancers tap out a dynamic, exuberant tribute to the art form at The Kessler, 1230 West Davis, on Friday, December 5 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 to $30 at prekindle.com.
