Deck the Halls With Yules of Blue

You’ve seen those Christmas trees on advertisements, on Pinterest and maybe on the Facebook page of that friend you have who fancies herself an interior designer: monochromatic, modern and cool. The tinsel is symmetric; the lights, perfectly twinkling. There are no crappy salt dough ornaments contributed by 3-year-olds. No Borg spaceships that followed your husband from his childhood and landed in the middle of your Christmas cheer. No glittering globes with the paint peeling off from the inside. And that is lame, people. Big sterile trees belong in hospital waiting rooms and on giant pedestals in shops you can’t afford to shop in. Trees should be a festive hot mess, and ornaments need to have meaning and history — which is why you should ditch that coordinated tree and go to town at Blue Yule, the annual Christmas celebration at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary, 3120 McKinney Avenue, on Friday, December 5 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Artists and patrons alike will create one-of-a-kind ornaments that range from traditional to totally off-kilter and sell them to raise funds for the MAC. Your tree will tell a unique story with a few of these baubles adorning it; admission is $25 to $35 at the door, or $25 in advance at the-mac.org.
