The Ol' Blog Bag — Shortly before Black Friday I wrote a column about a handful of people in retail who were crabbing about having to work even a half-day on Thanksgiving. I pointed out that when I was in high school, working at two Southern California department stores — the May Company in sales, then Bullock's in stock — I was glad to have the jobs, regardless of what special day it was.

I heard from many of you who agreed with me, and I thank you for your kind words. One email stood out for its nostalgic charm and eloquence. Here's almost all of what Karen Garner, public affairs and economic growth manager for the city of Rocklin, had to say:
