Engineering company Overland Contracting will hire 89 workers in Wake County after it opens headquarters in Garner with an $8.4 million investment.

Overland Contracting Inc. provides engineering, procurement and construction services in energy, water and telecommunications. The parent company, Black & Veatch, is among the Forbes list of 500 Largest Private Companies in the U.S. Black & Veatch currently employs nearly 200 workers in Wake and Mecklenburg counties.

Salaries will vary by job function, but the average annual payroll for the new jobs is approximately $7.4 million, or $83,000 when averaged across all 89 workers.

The project was made possible in part by a performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund of up to $70,000. The One NC Fund provides financial assistance, through local governments, to attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for grant funds. These grants also require and are contingent upon local matches.

"Employees with Overland Contracting Inc. are building vital infrastructure that improves local communities," said Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker in a statement. "Their work constructing electric generation, transmission and distribution systems, water and wastewater treatment facilities or telecommunications structures may generate greater economic development in the future."
