A new liquor store is scheduled to open in the Carrefour at Kirby Woods shopping center by the end of January.

Doc's Wine, Spirits & More will make its home in suite 101 next to Swanky's Taco Shop. The Carrefour complex is a site Trader Joe's is also believed to be scouting for a store location.

"We knew upfront there would be something similar to that (Trader Joe's) coming into the area, but we weren't specifically told it would be Trader Joe's," said the general manager of Doc's, Ryan Gill, who also manages Southwind Wine & Spirits.

Gill said he and Doc's owners, Audrey Page and Keith May, were attracted to the high-traffic Germantown corridor prior to hearing of a potential retail giant joining the area, and believe the volume of people a Trader Joe's-type business could draw would benefit Doc's.

The 9,000-square-foot property named in memory of Southwind Wine & Spirits founder Roy "Doc" Page claims it will have one of the largest sales floors in West Tennessee.

"We want to be something different and have a more sensory shopping experience," Gill said.

Both beer and wine growlers will be available along with multiple tasting stations. Wine, like bourbon, is made in batches and Doc's will offer a unique single barrel wine at the store.

"With all the changes in wine, it was going to be go big or go home," Gill said.

Voters in Memphis and surrounding cities, including Germantown, approved referendums on Nov. 4 that will allow grocery stores to begin selling wine in 2016.
