A Date Which Will Live in Infamy

"Instantly on the news from Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt ordered the Army and Navy: "Fight Back!" The U.S., after 22 years and 25 days of peace, was at war." Thus TIME reported on the events that followed the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor.

He spoke to Congress the next day. Before that night fell, war on Japan had been officially declared.

The first Burger-King franchise opened 60 years ago, in Miami. (For the record, that was after the original inspiration for McDonald's opened, but before Ray Kroc opened his first location.) And, as TIME described in a 1977 essay, even those who have health concerns about fast food often can't resist the call of the Whopper: "Public deplorers often turn out, under close questioning, to be private enjoyers. To Americans over 30 the glut, the avalanche of fast food may seem the miraculous fulfillment of childhood fantasy."

50 Years Ago: The Free Speech Movement

On Dec. 3, 1964, following a massive sit-in at the University of California at Berkeley, hundreds of students associated with the Free Speech Movement were arrested.

"The students sprawling over the littered floors offered no defiance," TIME reported. "They went limp, and for the next 13 hours police dragged them along hall ways, pushed them into elevators or bumped them down stairs, and shoved them into buses backed up at the rear entrance."
