An event honoring Cone Health CEO Emeritus Tim Rice on Thursday evening raised more than $1.1 million for the Cone Health Center for Children.
The funds establish an endowment under the name of Tim and Carolynn Rice that will support special projects, including providing educational materials, emergency patient services, dental supplies, medication and transportation to children who depend on the center for medical care.
About 750 attended the event at the Koury Convention Center, held in honor of Rice's contributions during his 36 years with Cone. After starting with the system as a pharmacist, Rice rose through the ranks to eventually lead the 11,000-employee organization for a decade as CEO.
Rice was a key player in establishing the Cone Health Center for Children in February after funding issues forced the layoff of 35 workers at Triad Adult and Pediatric Medicine, the county's largest provider to low-income and uninsured children.
Nearly 40,000 children in Guilford County are uninsured or in low-income situations. The center serves those from birth to age 21 who are chronically ill, developmentally delayed or affected by mental health issues.
"We are truly honored and humbled by this outpouring of support for a very special place that serves such an important population — our children," Rice said.
