Nearly 90,000 people have been added to Columbus' population since 2000 and the city is tops among all big metro areas in the state for growth.

But how does the capital city compare with other metro areas across the U.S.?

We can find out by using U.S. Census Bureau data released this week as part of its American Community Survey, which includes population figures from 2013. We looked at the population change from 2000 to 2013 for Columbus and some of its peer cities to see which ones are growing the fastest.

Three of the 12 cities analyzed have seen their populations shrink over that period.

Among U.S. "big cities" with populations above 500,000, Columbus is No. 10 in the U.S. for growth. Fort Worth, Texas, was No. 1 with 42.34 percent population growth from 2000 to 2013, followed by Charlotte, North Carolina (40.02 percent), Austin, Texas (27.45 percent), San Antonio, Texas (18.73 percent) and El Paso, Texas (17.23 percent).

Click on the slideshow to see how Columbus compares with peer cities like Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Austin and Charlotte for population growth.

A comparison of Columbus with other cities in Ohio will be published next week.
