Mark your calendar: Dec. 17 is the official date when the winners of the upstate New York casino competition will be announced.

The New York Gaming Facility Location board said Friday it will hold its last meeting of the year that day in Albany. The time and location are not yet known.

The board will decide which of 16 applicants should get a license to open up to four casinos upstate. Four communities are competing in the Albany region -- Schenectady, Rensselaer, East Greenbush or Howe Caverns in Cobleskill.

It's been known since last week that the board would tentatively meet Dec. 17 to make the decision.

The board said Friday that it also will meet Dec. 9 at 9 a.m. behind closed doors in Manhattan to review the "financial history and employment history of a particular persons or corporations" -- the latest of several executive sessions leading up to the final decision.

No decisions about the casinos will be made at the Dec. 9 meeting.

The big question now is where in Albany will the meeting be held to accommodate developers, public officials and media from across the state who want to witness a decision that will impact communities for years to come.
