City of San Antonio taps interim police chief

The city of San Antonio still has no new contract with its police department. But it will have a new chief to lead that force in 2015 — at least for a while.

City Manager Sheryl Sculley announced on Friday afternoon the appointment of Deputy Police Chief Anthony Trevino as interim chief, pending confirmation by the City Council.

Trevino will replace William McManus, who is retiring at the end of the year. The San Antonio native has more than 20 years of law enforcement experience in the San Antonio Police Department and has held the deputy position since 2011.

McManus said Trevino has "played an instrumental role in moving the department forward."

Trevino led the implementation of the San Antonio Police Department's patrol resource allocation model, created to improve response times and calls for service. He also was head of Internal Affairs, supervised the homicide unit and co-chaired the Police Executive Research Forum Internal Affairs subcommittee.

Trevino's appointment is scheduled for City Council confirmation on Dec. 11. The city plans to launch a national search for a permanent police chief in January.
