Non-profit offers roof repairs to families in need

DALLAS -— For homeowners struggling to make ends meet, a costly roof repair is likely to become a low priority; something newly-formed nonprofit Roof Angels is trying to change.

Chris Zazo and his company, Aspenmark Roofing & Solar, teamed up with Habitat for Humanity to create Roof Angels.

On Wednesday morning, dozens of roofers started work on two homes in Dallas' South Oak Cliff neighborhood. Both homes, according to Zazo, were in need of upgrades.

"These roofs are battered pretty well — mainly by wind and hail damage," he said. "This year has been an extremely mild year, but we did have some pockets of extreme weather."

Starting with these two homes, Zazo hopes to help 30 homeowners in a year's time.

"Our industry as a whole gets a bad rap due to the amount of excessive storm damage that we get in the Metroplex ... we wanted to make a difference by doing some good in our community," Zazo said.

One of those repairs is taking place at the home of 21-year-old Cristian Espinoza's parents.

"I'd be in my room, and when it rains, I see nothing but water dripping," Espinoza said. "I knew it was bad, and there was a big hole in the roof."

Homeowners who qualify can apply for assistance through Habitat for Humanity. Those in need of repairs are required to make a one-time payment that is a percentage of that homeowner's monthly income.
