DALLAS – The Salvation Army is gearing up to feed 2,000 homeless or needy people for Thanksgiving.

Employees have spent the last week preparing more than 2,000 pounds of food, including 90 turkeys, 250 pumpkin pies, and 500 pounds of mashed potatoes.

The Salvation Army plans to feed the 600 clients who live at the shelter on Harry Hines Boulevard first, then will open the doors to the community.

The non-profit reaches out to other social service groups to put the word out that Thanksgiving dinner will be served to those in need.

The Salvation Army of Dallas has prepared 90 turkeys, 250 pumpkin pies, and 500 pounds of mashed potatoes in addition to more food for a feast for the less fortunate. Monica Hernandez has the story.

110 volunteers will help serve the meal between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.

"It's so important that not only individuals but families have the opportunity to continue the tradition of a Thanksgiving meal," said Jeffrey Upperman, associate director of operations for Salvation Army Dallas. "Individuals with limited resources can't always do that, and especially you'll see there will be extended families that will get together."
