DALLAS — Some people refer to the neighborhood around Malcolm X Boulevard near Interstate 30 as an area where poverty is high, where lack of nutritious options is normal, and where shelters stay busy daily.

The City of Dallas has plans to turn things around.

After months of planning, an "opportunity center" will finally open on Thursday.

CitySquare, a 52,0000-square-foot complex, is a huge multi-service center. Organizers say it will impact economically-challenged residents between downtown, South Dallas, Fair Park and the east side.

In one wing, there is a food distribution center. The shelves are already stocked. Fresh fruit and produce is also ready for clients to grab.

Staff says CitySquare Opportunity Center will have several work training centers. It will also house offices for agencies like Workforce Solutions, Lift and Americorps.

The site will be the staging area for Food on the Move, CitySquare's fast-growing afterschool and summer feeding program.

The City of Dallas and its partners are planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony for City Square Opportunity Center on Thursday morning.
