Railroad Commissioners Offer Hunting, Camping Safety Tips

AUSTIN –– Fall is a great time for hunting, camping and exploring the great state of Texas. During this popular outdoor season, Railroad Commissioners remind Texans who are using propane-powered camp heaters, lanterns and stoves or who drive recreational vehicles (RVs) to be safe and follow a few basic outdoor appliance safety rules.

“Safety starts with approved appliances,” said Chairman Elizabeth Ames Jones. “Use only appliances manufactured and equipped for use with propane and follow all manufacturers’ directions carefully when operating appliances. Always check fuel connections for leaks before using. And always make sure your shelter or campsite is adequately ventilated. Do not use portable heaters or lanterns in enclosed areas such as tents, campers and other vehicles.”

Commissioner David Porter said, “Propane cylinders should always be stored, moved and used in an upright position, unless otherwise indicated on the cylinder itself. Also, cylinders and appliances should be kept out of reach of children at all times.”

Commissioner Barry T. Smitherman said, “Many campers, and quite a few ‘winter Texans,’ travel by RV every fall. Now is a good time to take your RV to a qualified propane gas dealer or licensed RV repair facility for a pre-season checkup. Repair technicians can check your system for leaks and proper regulator settings, while inspecting the valves and fittings. It’s also a good idea to check propane tanks for rust and dents.”
