Denton public health and safety at risk from weak gas well ordinance

Tomorrow the Denton City Council will have a public hearing and most likely vote to approve the latest gas well drilling ordinance.

This ordinance will not protect public health, property values or the Denton way of life.
If you care about the future of Denton, you need to be there.

Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m.
City Council Chambers at Denton City Hall
215 E. McKinney St.

The city has had four years to get it right but they got it horribly wrong. The latest draft ordinance is filled with loopholes yet the city council, as reported in the Denton Record Chronicle appears ready to approve it.

Gap over gas rule rewrite widens
Fifth draft passes muster with city, while residents say ordinance still weak

The City Council appeared satisfied with the rewrites during a work session last Tuesday, giving little feedback to the staff on the fifth draft other than to ask how to best explain the final product to residents.

Other Barnett Shale cities have adopted much stronger gas well ordinances. Show up Tuesday evening and ash the council this question:

Why are the residents in Southlake, Flower Mound, and others more worthy of protection than Denton?

Interesting to note that there have been 2344 Violations in 2011, 829 in December alone. Most were minor, but quite a few were not. What I’m not seeing is how many were repeat violations on either the same site or same operator. Also of note, there were 134 Violations of “Property free of trash, debris, weeds/brush, pools of liquid”. Nice to see that “pools of liquid” is no worse than weeds/brush. I wonder if the “Pools of liquid” also had something to do with the 134 Violations of “Erosion Control”? (These were 268 of the 829 Violations in December)

Thank you Peggy Heinkel-Wolf for the crucial reporting.

Thank you Sharon Wilson and all of those who stand with you right now.
Please do be careful in that Lion’s den tonight. Truth be told, I’m worried sick.

Please please be careful with yourselves. Thank you again. Good luck.
