Alternative Fuels Research & Education Division (AFRED)

AFRED is charged by statute (Tex. Nat. Res. Code §81.0681) with promoting natural gas, propane and other alternative fuels that are or have the potential to be effective in improving the air quality, energy security, or economy of Texas.  The program is funded by an appropriation from the Oil & Gas Regulation and Cleanup Fund.

AFRED operates outreach, public education and incentive programs in partnership with fuel and equipment suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and consumers. The division also administers and serves as a clearinghouse for information about federal and state grants that seek to increase the use of alternative fuels.
