The 'boom' goes bust...

Her first royalty check hit the mailbox in 2008, and Becky Ferruggia was excited to see the amount –– about $8,000. Chesapeake Energy landmen had told everyone in her neighborhood that the gas wells would produce for 20 or 30 years. Subsequent checks were more in the $1,000 range, but by year’s end,…

Thanks to everyone who came to the city council meeting tonight. Several residents asked the city to lobby in Austin, starting January 13th, to protect a Home Rule Municipalities right to regulate oil and gas development within their city limits. The city council and mayor told us Denton's plan is to actively lobby to protect our right to self govern, keep local control local and get big government out of our lives.
The council seemed quite impressed that people are aware of their lobbying effort and thanked us for participating in the process.
It is great to see Denton's residents taking an active part in their future and the city encouraging it.
Great things can happen when we work together.

Oregon is watching.

SPOILER: industry treated Dentonites with contempt.

Rather than the normal tit-for-tat reporting on controversial issues, this The Guardian article really tells the story of how the fracking ban came to be from our president's perspective.

Last month, Denton, a college town not far from Dallas, voted to ban hydraulic fracturing – thanks in no small part to a dedicated band of mainly female activists. How did they manage to beat big oil? Suzanne Goldenberg reports

The city is listening to Denton voters now we need to make sure Austin is also listening.

The city of Denton has answered lawsuits from the state and from the oil and gas industry challenging its ban on hydraulic fracturing, calling the process a public nuisance and one that subverts public order. The city also asked for a change of venue in the state’s case against the ban.

Denton fires back! You can find the city's legal responses to TxOGA and GLO here.

The first city in Texas to ban hydraulic fracturing tells a court it has every right to do so, calling the oil and gas extraction technique a “public nuisance” with "offensive results."

Why do we need a ban?

Here's one reason: state regulators (who claim the ban usurps their authority) refuse to protect people from pollution.

Is the Oil & Gas industry poisoning the air with toxic chemicals in the Eagle Ford Shale? Some folks say flaring and air pollution is making them sick.

DAG is pleased to announce that we will join Earthworks and seek intervener status before the courts so that we can be co-defendants in the lawsuit filed against the city of Denton. The city is agreeable to DAG having this status.

We are very close to retaining national and local attorneys who are familiar with and successful in working on these type of cases.

We will make a more complete statement after the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Sincerely yours, DAG Board

Something to consider as the TX state legislature gets set to begin session.

This is a time for robust policy suggestions. The problems associated with urban drilling will only intensify. The lesson from Denton on November 4 is that a reliably conservative city who has had to put up with the consequences of natural gas production in its city limits has said enough is enough.…
