BROWNSVILLE, Texas – City of Brownsville Commissioner for District 3 Deborah Portillo, Texas State Board of Education Representative for District 2 Ruben Cortez and Jubilee Academic Center supporters this morning joined students and officials from Jubilee for a groundbreaking event launching construction of a $20M campus on Brownsville’s north side.

The 9.7-acre Athlos Leadership Academy Brownsville: A Jubilee Academic Center campus on Pablo Kisel Blvd. will accommodate 909 K-9th grade students beginning fall 2014. Jubilee will also have two feeder sites located at Jubilee Leadership Academy Brownsville, which will serve K-5th grade students, and Livingway Leadership Academy, which will serve PreK-5th grade students feeder sites.

The partnership between Jubilee and Athlos Academies, developed by The Charter School Fund, will provide Brownsville families the opportunity to enroll in a tuition free school designed to embrace and represent the “healthy body, prepared mind” philosophy. In combination with Athlos athletic curriculum and nutrition efforts, the academic program will be based on a back-to-basics curriculum, accelerated pace of study, and high expectations for both academic achievement and behavior. A focus on character building, in combination with a positive discipline program and parental involvement, will provide a safe and structured environment for learning. The new campus will also retain the tight-knit, family-focused culture Jubilee is known for.

“We are just thrilled about our partnership with Athlos Academies and The Charter School Fund,” Jubilee Academic Center Associate Director of the Rio Grande Valley John Jacobson said. “This amazing new campus will allow us to further expand our mission of providing a nurturing community, focused on leadership and educational excellence.”

Students will be learning in the midst of a state-of-the-art instruction and fitness campus. The 74,046-square-foot campus will feature a library, a computer lab, a science classroom, a music room, an art room and a performance stage. The athletic space will include an indoor 40-yard turf field, weight training room, regulation size basketball court, baseball diamond, football and soccer field, freestyle play area and playground.

Not only will students have the opportunity to train during school, but specialized fee-based athletic training sessions, delivered by Velocity Sports Performance’s degreed and certified coaches, will be available after school to them and the community as well.

Two additional Athlos Academies – Athlos Leadership Academy San Antonio and Athlos Leadership Academy Austin – will be added to the Jubilee Academic Center district in fall 2014. All three campuses are currently accepting applications.

Major partners involved in the Brownsville project include Engineered Structures, Inc. and BRS Architects.
