Diaper drive slated for Friday

The University of North Texas College of Public Affairs and Community Service is conducting a diaper drive until Friday in Room 209 of Chilton Hall, 410 Ave. C.

Donations can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to help replenish stock for Captain Hope’s Kids, a nonprofit organization that helps homeless children in North Texas, according an announcement from the organizers. More than 160,000 diapers were stolen from the nonprofit organization in early October.

Additional donation drop-off locations will be announced on the Denton Humanity Restored Facebook page.

Ryan Elementary Wrangler Round-Up planned Friday

The Ryan Elementary School Wrangler Round-Up is planned from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, organizers announced.

The fall festival will feature games, drawings, prizes, a silent auction, contests, food, a disc jockey and other activities.

The school is at 201 W. Ryan Road in Denton.

Park offers programs on bats, photography, spiders

Visitors to the Johnson Branch Unit of Ray Roberts Lake State Park this weekend can learn about bats, nature photography, mammals and spiders, according to a park press release.

A class titled “The Good, the Bat and the Ugly” will be offered at 6 p.m. Friday in the amphitheater. Participants will learn about some of the state’s 32 species of bats and go on a night hike.

A nature photography workshop is set for 9 a.m. Saturday in Pavilion 1.

Led by Elizabeth Malmberg, the free workshop will help participants learn more about camera settings, lighting and other basics.

Participants are asked to bring single-lens reflex cameras or other cameras with multiple settings. Space is limited. To reserve a spot, call Danielle Bradley at 940-637-2636.

A program titled “The Fast and the Furriest” at 11 a.m. Saturday in Pavilion 1 will teach families how to identify various mammals found in the park. There will be an optional track-hunting hike after the program.

Park visitors can learn all about the Texas brown tarantula during a program planned at 2 p.m. Saturday in Pavilion 1. There will even be a live spider for participants to meet.

Park admission costs $7 for those 13 and older.

Environmental learning area to study stars Friday

The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area will present “Stars on the Prairie,” an astronomy program for ages 5 and older, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

There is a $5 program fee in addition to the regular gate fee of $5 per person.

Staff members will play host to a campfire program from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Featured will be stories, songs, a craft for children and toasted marshmallows.

Autumn bazaar scheduled for Saturday at church

An autumn bazaar featuring handcrafted items will be held at Denton’s Asbury United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

All proceeds will support community charities including Denton County Christmas Toy Store, Asbury Relief Ministry Food Pantry and Our Daily Bread, as well as camp scholarships.

Denton car show set to help Operation Kindness

A car show benefiting Operation Kindness is planned from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at 803 S. Locust St. in Denton.

Event sponsors include Super Dents and Details, Denton Vape Shoppe and O’Reilly Auto Parts.

There is no charge to attend the show, which will feature 33 classes and prizes for old and new cars and motorcycles. Cost to enter the show is $10.

Music will be provided by Hares on the Mountain and free hot dogs will be served. There will also be door prizes and auto detail and maintenance demonstrations.

Family-friendly fall festival planned Saturday in Corinth

Corinth Rehabilitation Suites, 3511 Corinth Parkway, will conduct a fall festival from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday to raise money for a Christmas party for its residents.

The family-friendly event will feature a costume contest for children, a cupcake walk, a pumpkin patch, a bounce house, games, pie throwing, face painting, a silent auction and other activities.

Event to benefit pulmonary hypertension research

The eighth annual Zebra Phest will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday to benefit pulmonary hypertension research and awareness, organizers announced recently.

Events will includes a 5K race, a 1-mile walk, a free 100-yard dash for youngsters, butterfly release, face painting, a raffle, a silent auction, vendor booths, music and a picnic.

Gary Bruce of Pilot Point, a member of an area pulmonary hypertension support group, said the group has members from throughout the area who are working to promote the fundraiser, which will be at Andy Brown East Park, 260 E. Parkway Blvd. in Coppell.

Interfaith Ministries to distribute coats Saturday

Interfaith Ministries of Denton Inc. will conduct its annual Coats for Kids distribution beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The event will be at Interfaith’s office at 1109 N. Elm St. and will be first-come, first-served.

The distribution will continue until 3 p.m. or when all coats are given out.

Parents or guardians must have a valid form of Texas-issued identification and must be accompanied by all children in need of coats.

There is a limit of one coat per child.

Lewisville mall slates program against bullying

Vista Ridge Mall will join in a program titled “Malls & Retailers United Against Bullying” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, according to a press release from the mall.

The free event will be presented in association with National Bullying Prevention Month in the mall’s center court area.

Featured will be a friendship march, an anti-bullying pledge, crafts, face painting and other activities.

Spooktacular Trails event set Saturday in Lewisville

Lewisville Parks and Leisure Services will offer its annual Spooktacular Trails and Glow Run Extravaganza from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park, 1301 S. Railroad St.

Sponsors, vendors and community organizations will provide activities at their booths for children, according to a city press release.

Featured activities include a kid-friendly haunted house, carnival games, face painting, 5K and 1-mile runs and a ghostly hayride.

The ghostly hayride closes at 7:45 p.m.

A free shuttle will run from the various parking lots at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park. Food and drinks will be on sale at the concessions area.

Bowling fundraiser to benefit Riding Unlimited

The folks at Riding Unlimited therapeutic horseback riding center will play host to a bowl-a-thon Sunday at University Lanes, 1212 E. University Drive in Denton.

Sessions will be from noon to 2 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Teams of four can sign up for a cost of $10 per bowler, including shoe rental, and the fee can be paid at the bowling alley upon arrival, according to a press release from Riding Unlimited. Each person will bowl two games, and prizes will be awarded at the end of each shift.

The event will raise funds to help riders from the center attend the Chisholm Challenge horse show, which is held each January in conjunction with the Fort Worth Stock Show, a spokeswoman for the center said.
