Alabama-No-No person, firm, corporation, partnership or association may possess, sell, offer for sale, import or cause to be brought or imported into the state the following animals: any species of mongoose, any member of the family Cervidae (deer, elk, moose, caribou), species of coyote, fox, raccoon, skunk, wild rodents or wild turkey.

Alaska-No-no private ownership of exotic animals is allowed.

Arizona-Yes-Requires the owner of the exotic animal to obtain a license or permit or to register the animal with state or local authorities to privately possess the animal (excludes states only requiring import permits)

Arkansas-Yes- But it is unlawful to possess 6 or more bobcat, coyote, deer, gray fox, red fox, opossum, quail, rabbit, raccoon and squirrel. It doesn't say anything about requiring permits etc.

California-No- It is unlawful for persons to possess wild animals including raccoons unless the animal was in possession prior to January 1992.

Colorado-No- It is unlawful for persons to possess a raccoon.

Connecticut-No-It is unlawful for persons to possess a raccoon.

Delaware-Yes- All persons must obtain a permit before they can possess a live wild mammal.

Florida-Yes- However you must obtain a no-cost permit.

Georgia-No- It is unlawful for persons to possess inherently dangerous animals as pets.

Hawaii-No-It is unlawful for persons to introduce exotic animals for private use into Hawaii.

Idaho-Yes- All species of mammals, birds, or reptiles that are found in the wild and are not species of special concern may be held in captivity without a permit so long as the possessor retains proof that the animal was lawfully obtained. In addition, before bringing an animal into the state an owner must obtain an import permit and comply with specific caging requirements for the animal.

Illinois-Yes-There are no state requirements for a person possessing exotic species including raccoons.

Indiana-Yes-All persons who possess an exotic animal including a raccoon must obtain a permit for each animal they possess.

Iowa-No-: A person shall not own, possess or breed any exotic animal including a raccoon.

Kansas-No- No person may possess or breed a regulated animal as a pet. This includes raccoons.

Kentucky-No-No person may possess exotic animals including raccoons.

Lousiana-No- No person may possess raccoons as pets. If you possessed one of these animals prior to the passage of the regulation you are grandfathered in.

Maine-Yes-A person may possess a wild animal including a raccoon after obtaining a permit.

Maryland-No- No person may possess or breed the following species of animals as a pet: foxes, skunks, raccoons.

Massachussetts-No-No person may possess as a pet a wild bird, mammal, fish, reptile or amphibian.

Michigan-Yes-There are no requirements for ownership of a raccoon except a prior entry permit must be obtained from the director for all wild animal or exotic animal species including raccoons prior to an exotic animal entering the state the Department of Natural Resources may require the possessor to have the animal examined by an accredited veterinarian to determine the health status, proper housing, husbandry and confinement standards are being met.

Minnesota-No- It is unlawful for a person to possess a regulated animal including a raccoon.

Mississippi-Yes- It is unlawful for a person to import or possess any wild animal including raccoons unless that person holds a permit or is exempted from holding a permit.

Missouri-Yes-except such person has to register the animal with the local law enforcement agency in the county in which the animal is kept.

Montana-Yes- If you get a raccoon from another state it must be accompanied by a one-time entry permit and an official health.

Nebraska-Yes-There are no state requirements for raccoons as pets.

Nevada-Yes-But not without first having obtained a permit to do so.

New Hampshire-Yes-A permit to possess wildlife shall be required for all species designated as controlled including a raccoon.

New Jersey-No-It is unlawful for persons to possess an exotic species including a racoon as a pet.

New Mexico-Yes There are no state laws for a person possessing a raccoon

New York-No-It is unlawful for a person to possess a wild animal including a raccoon.

North Carolina-Yes-The state does not require the owner to obtain a license or permit to possess the animal within the state. An entry permit from the State Veterinarian is required before importing into the state a skunk, fox, raccoon etc.

North Dakota-Yes there are no requirements for a person possessing a raccoon.

Ohio-Yes-Persons in the state possessing non-domestic animals including raccoons do not need to obtain a permit. No person may bring into the state a non-domestic animal unless the possessor: obtains an entry permit; health certificate certifying the animal is free of infectious diseases; and a certificate of veterinary inspection.

Oklahoma-Yes-But you will first need to obtain a permit.

Oregon-Yes-A Permit required to keep exotic animal including a raccoon.

Pennsylvania-Yes-No person may keep exotic wildlife including a raccoon without first receiving a permit from the wildlife commission.

Rhode Island-Yes-No person may possess an exotic animal including a raccoon, without first obtaining a permit. All persons obtaining a permit must demonstrate they have both adequate facilities, and adequate knowledge of animal health and husbandry to ensure both public safety and health.

South Carolina-Yes-There are no state laws governing the possession of wildlife including raccoons.

South Dakota-Yes-A permit is required to possess any non-domestic mammal including a raccoon.

Tennessee-No- It is unlawful for persons to possess any wildlife including raccoons.

Texas-Yes-There are no requirements for a person possessing a raccoon.

Utah-No- A person may not possess a wild animal including a raccoon.

Vermont-No- It is unlawful for persons to possess exotic animals, including raccoons as pets.

Virginia-No-No person may possess nonnative exotic animals that are classed as predatory or undesirable as a pet.

Washington-No-Law: No person may possess or breed an exotic animal including a raccoon.

West Virginia- there are no state laws governing private possession of exotic animals including raccoons.

Wisconsin-Yes-There are no requirements for a person possessing a raccoon
