A Dallas police officers used a tourniquet Thursday night to save a man’s life after he was shot in Pleasant Grove.

Officer Damien Lookenbill, 36, was one of the officers to respond to a shooting call around 10:45 p.m. in the 8100 block of Maddox Avenue near Buckner Boulevard. Joseph Garcia had been shot in the leg and appeared to have an arterial bleed, police said.

Lookenbill used a tourniquet on Garcia. The tourniquet is part of a medical kit the Dallas Police Department supplied to 3,200 officers last year. A similar kit was used to save an on-duty Dallas police officer shot earlier this year.

Garcia was transported to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, where he underwent surgery. Paramedics and doctors who treated Garcia said the use of the tourniquet likely saved the man’s life, Dallas police officials said.

Police have not said whether they have a suspect in the shooting.
