Regional health career center moves to UIndy
A regional program that recruits and retains healthcare professionals to work in underserved communities has a new home. UIndy now hosts the Metropolitan Indianapolis/Central Indiana Area Health Education Center, known as MICI-AHEC, which is active in Marion and the eight surrounding counties. It is one of eight regional AHEC centers around the state dedicated to this special kind of workforce development, which is based on research showing that health professionals tend to serve communities where they grew up and received their training.

Study: Metal theft costs county $8M a year
Metal theft has increased dramatically in Marion County during the past few years, rising from an average of seven incidents per day in 2008 to approximately 11 per day in the 2011-2013 period, according to a new study from UIndy. Catalytic converter thefts have nearly doubled, appliances are increasingly popular targets, and the crimes seem to be concentrated in specific areas of the city, the study found. However, property owners can prevent many of these crimes by taking simple precautions, says Kevin Whiteacre, associate professor of sociology and criminal justice and director of UIndy’s Community Research Center.

Football: Greyhounds deliver convincing win on Homecoming
The UIndy football team (7-1, 5-0 GLVC) posted a decisive 52-14 Homecoming win against visiting Lincoln University Saturday night. Now on a six-game winning streak, UIndy racked up more than 500 yards of total offense for the third consecutive game. The win, combined with a loss by William Jewell, put the Hounds in sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Greyhounds have a short week ahead of them as they host in-state Saint Joseph’s Thursday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m. The contest will air on CBS Sports Network as the Division II Football Game of the Week.

Construction on UIndy’s new Health Pavilion is progressing quickly. Crews are placing steel beams to form the frame of the 160,000-square-foot building, which will house UIndy’s respected health sciences programs. The final structural beam spent a week in the Schwitzer Student Center atrium for the UIndy community to sign before it is put in place during a Topping Out ceremony on Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.

UIndy Athletics issues year-long Champions Challenge
UIndy’s student athletes have had an outstanding year! The Greyhounds seek to flex their muscles even more and be counted among the elite in Division II athletics. To help us accomplish that goal, we’ll be raising funds to support our athletics programs through the Champions Challenge. A generous donor has pledged $250,000 in matching gifts. All new, unrestricted gifts to UIndy Athletics of $25 or more will qualify for a 2:1 match. The match also applies to any increase in unrestricted giving of $25 or more over last year’s gifts. Renewed gifts will be matched 1:1.

At UIndy, several student-run agencies in areas like experience design & event planning, graphic design, and public relations, give our Greyhounds incredible opportunities to work with local businesses and organizations while fine-tuning the skills they’ll need to begin their careers. But these agencies aren’t for the faint of heart. Our students put in long hours and turn out top-notch work. The dedication has paid off in many ways, including our student-run public relations firm being named best in the country.
