ST. LOUIS • A surgical resident at Barnes-Jewish Hospital has been indicted on a federal charge of possession of child pornography.

Police searched the home of Dr. Shoichi Okada, of Richmond Heights, on Nov. 3 after an online police investigation found child pornography that was available for download, a federal court affidavit says.

After the search, two St. Louis County police detectives went to St. Louis Children’s Hospital to interview Okada, and he admitted that he had been downloading child porn since 2013, the affidavit claims.

A Barnes spokeswoman said that was Okada’s first day of a rotation at Children’s.

Okada was charged by complaint the next day with possession of child pornography, and was indicted Wednesday in U.S. District Court on the same charge.

Barnes-Jewish spokesman Nicholas McLaren said that Okada has been placed on administrative leave and has no patient contact. He said that the charges were unrelated to Okada’s employment with Barnes.

Okada’s lawyer did not return messages seeking comment.

The Missouri Division of Professional Regulation lists no discipline for him, and says he went to the Case Western Reserve University School Of Medicine.

A spokeswoman for the John Cochran VA Medical Center said that while Okada was not employed by the center, he had worked there, but not since the end of 2013.
