Guest Picks: Michael Sheen

Michael Sheen was on the show October 23 to discuss his revival of Dylan Thomas's "Under Milk Wood" at the 92nd Street Y. He is a fan of Murakami and Neil Gaiman. Find out what else he is a fan of!
What have you read or seen over the past year (book, play, film, etc...) that moved or surprised you?
I just watched “The Staircase,” an 8-part documentary series which was fascinating and terrifying in equal measure. Also, a terrific play by a young British writer Vicky Jones called “The One”—fresh and unique writing about a relationship. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds at the Shrine was a great rock n’ roll show.
What are you listening to right now?
The original Caedmon recordings of Dylan Thomas. Surprised at how funny some of them are—“A Visit to Grandpa’s” especially. Just got all of Scott Walker’s albums on vinyl which I’m very excited about. And early The Cure stuff like “Disintegration.”
What's the last great book you read?
Murakami’s “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.”
What's the one thing you're a fan of that people might not expect?
Science fiction. One of my favorite writers is Phillip K. Dick. And comics—Daniel Clowes, Jeff Lemire, Adrian Tomine, Neil Gaiman.
What's your favorite comfort food?
Egg and chips (fries).

What was the artistic reasoning behind not portraying Dr. Masters as a 'chrome dome'? I think the sexual athletics between Masters and Johnson takes on an even more pointed aspect if their physical dissimilarities are retained.
Sci_fi? Have you read Heinlein's "For Us, the Living: A Comedy of Customs"? His first novel that went unpublished for 65 years. It's a utopian fantasy of 22nd century U.S.A. (sorry due to war, Europe has rolled back to the Middle Ages.)
It may someday make a fantastic mini-series but the urge to 'true up' the historical aspects may just make it a preachy mess.
