If you’ve been around Dallas long enough you have vivid memories of the so-called death penalty handed down to the SMU football program back in the ’80s. Thaddeus Matula certainly does. He was a little boy enamored of the Mustangs when it all went down. He graduated from SMU. Then he got to make a documentary about it all: Pony Express was part of the original batch of ESPN 30 for 30 films.
Next Tuesday at 7 p.m. Matula will be at the Angelika Dallas for a free screening of Pony Excess, followed by a conversation with another SMU alum, Dallas Film Society artistic director James Faust. Tears may be shed (though Faust is still more of a Tech guy). Eric Dickerson’s name will be invoked. Matula will also discuss his new 30 for 30 joint, Brian and the Boz, about Irving native and Oklahoma football star/personality Brian Bosworth. Listen to our conversation with Matula right here. RSVP for tickets right here.
