Nelson Mandela was a retired politician and anti-apartheid activist. He served as President of South Africa from 1994-1999 and was the first black South African to hold office. Mandela fought apartheid since his early 20's by working to change institutionalized racism and the inequality within social classes. His campaign for peaceful non-violent defiance against the South African government and their policies paved the way for change. Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Price in 1993.
