Huntington Beach Investigates Elephant Being Used in Resort Wedding Ceremony Despite Ban

Here comes the bride and groom, riding on a pachyderm.

An animal rights organization has pressed Huntington Beach to investigate how an elephant was used in a recent wedding ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa despite a city ordinance prohibiting wild animal performances.

Animal Defenders International (ADI) sent the Weekly photos from the Saturday, Oct. 18, wedding ceremony that extended from a public street to the resort property. The group also identified the elephant as Tai, who appeared in the film Water for Elephants starring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon and is owned by Perris-based Have Trunk Will Travel.

In 2002, the Huntington Beach City Council passed Municipal Code Chapter 7.14 that states, "It shall be unlawful for any person to permit the performance of any wild and exotic animal for public entertainment, amusement or benefit on any public or private property within the City of Huntington Beach." Neighboring Fountain Valley has a similar ban.

""The city of Huntington Beach was not aware of this event, and will be speaking to the hotels about this issue," said Janeen Laudenback of the city's Community Services Department when contacted by the Weekly. "At this juncture we have nothing to add."

The city issued no permits allowing a performing animal in a ceremony.

"Huntington Beach had the foresight to enact this important ordinance 12 years ago prohibiting wild animal performances to protect the public and wild animals, and we appreciate the attention they are taking now to get to the bottom of what went wrong and how to prevent it from happening again," said Jan Creamer, ADI's president.

The group believes the hotel and wedding party may have been unaware that Tai was among a group of elephants who made headlines around the time Water for Elephants was released in 2011. Undercover footage fell into the hands of ADI showing elephants being struck and electric shocked by Have Trunk Will Travel trainers. That prompted ADI to release photos to the media, including this one:

Alleged animal abuse uncovered by ADI.

In a bit of life becoming art, Tai is brutally attacked by the circus owner with a bullhook in Water for Elephants, although the producers, stars, studio and trainers stressed that was make believe and the elephant was trained on set with kindness, marshmallows and positive reinforcement. (A trick I believe Witherspoon had used on Joaquin Phoenix on the Walk Like a Man set.)

It was also around this time, I seem to recall through a trunky haze, that the Santa Ana Zoo and Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa ended their elephant rides and relationships with Have Trunk Will Travel.

The elephant was being ridden like a horse. Grow up and stay out of other people's business. This isn't Russia or Nazi Germany. This doesn't need to be investigated. It's a waste of money.

That doesn't change how the animals are trained to be so obedient in the first place...

Patty, the Gadhimai festival in Nepal every year is also a cultural/religious event. About 50,000 animals are hacked for that purpose. Culture and religion are utterly irrelevant in comparison to the value of a life, and human compassion/respect for that life.

Deaths caused (reported/recorded) by animal activists in the last 5 years: 0. Animal activists killed by poachers (who capture/kill animals for profit): GOOGLE it... Animals slaughtered in U.S. last year-> over 3 BILLION Animals killed in cosmetics testing in U.S. last year-> hundreds of millions Simple math.

@Raj, I think "all" Indian business is a bit of a stretch. I've went to several Indian weddings in the last few months, two of them in HB, and none of them used animals. I'm pretty sure the no one threw a fit at the lack of abused animals.

@Alex, I'm a kid from a third-world country. *Was..grown up a bit now I suppose. I've never been prodded or had an iron hook to my ankles/knees/hands for anyone's entertainment. And besides, I'm sure "most kids in third-world countries" shouldn't be compared to how a wild animal is treated in our "modern" America...which, last time I checked, has its own share of issues.

For everyone who is commenting to "leave them be" or that this is all somehow alright because we eat meat anyway or some illogical point, I'll just say this... Everything changes once you look directly into the eyes of an animal that has suffered, that is being used for entertainment or other human purposes...and you see it shed tears. Entertainment, performances, weddings, religious/cultural functions...it doesn't change what this living being has went through to get there: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=974661119227254&set=a.103319023028139.7495.100000501248107&type=1&theater

Can I comment on this? Seeing as how I'm Indian and all (I should know a thing or two about Indian weddings/traditions...). Seeing as how I've seen elephants in the wild and in captivity more times than most people have seen Disney's "Dumbo," I have *some* insight into elephants and their "trainers." It's pretty easy...actually. Elephants are NOT DOMESTICATED BY NATURE. It takes years to break down the spirit and independence of an elephant. These animals, despite what many want to believe, are not trained with kindness and compassion. You can't beat servitude into a instinctively wild animal using hugs and loving caresses. You use bull hooks, electric prods, and chains with spikes to dig into their ankles so they don't move unless ordered to. I like lavish/awesome things and cultural traditions as much as the next person, but abusing/torturing a living thing shouldn't be allowed, for any reason...AT ALL.

Love all the people that say "get a life" or are amused by this or think it's funny. I'm an educated human being who considers myself compassionate enough and empathetic enough to consider all sides of an argument. And I'm in high tech sales. Shouldn't we all? Lol. People think that this is common fodder or ridiculous banter. But the bottom line is that elephants are not meant to be used for this kind of thing. They are amazing creatures that deserve to run free in their own natural habitat. Think about dogs in some other countries. Dogs and cats are eaten as meals. They are bred to be eaten. It's sad because I think half the people on this post who are connecting in a laissez faire way would really empathize. Put ur comments in perspective. Seriously. I'm so shocked about the lack of intelligence when it comes to these animals. They deserve respect and no ones here to have their back but us. And no. I'm not an activist. I have a day job. #natch.

Please, ADI, get a life. You may want to help HB write the law to be more clear. Can you repeat after me...? The law is vague and overbroad. Define wild, exotic, entertainment, benefit, and amusement for me. And make sure that whoever allegedly violates that law has a clear understanding of how it should be applied and what they mean. I'll bet the muni code has no definition of those words.

Kimberly, have you ever ate a hamburger? Cattle were exploited for their meat... Do you have any diamonds? People were probably exploited getting them out of the earth. While I love animals... animals were put on this earth for us to take care of and use. In modern day America that elephant probably lives better than kids in most 3rd world countries. You ever hear of working dogs? They love to work. Are you against seeing eye dogs too?

The article clearly states the city did NOT issue any permit(s). In. Addition, when you hire an animal from a performance company, that = entertainment.

Yes, Najmia- please tell us how you are familiar with the educational background of everyone at that wedding and Kimberly's. Please include if they are zoologists and/or animal behaviorist experts.

And you obviously don't care about the exploitation or unnecessary suffering of animals. It isn't about you accepting the consequences of YOUR actions, it's about caring that those who mistreat animals face consequences!

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Any lawyer or judge will tell you that. But being ignorant in general is not against the law. So you'll be safe for now, Until your ignorance causes you to really step on your dick! Then you will be screwed. I can read it in your words, It's coning! Jack ass.
