San Antonio Fatal Bus Shooting Suspect Arrested

Updated: Thursday, November 13 2014, 03:07 PM CST

Authorities have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with a deadly shooting on a bus in San Antonio Tuesday.

Camera shutters echoed as San Antonio police officers took Zachary Gonzalez into custody.

But police say Gonzalez created louder chaos a little more than 24 hours earlier, when he opened fire on Donovan Arzola on board a VIA bus.

Eyewitnesses say Gonzalez randomly targeted Arzola after trying to pick a fight with other passengers.

"Mr. Gonzales got on this bus. He got into a verbal confrontation with this victim and he lost his cool. He just lost it and decided to take that victim's life," says Officer Douglas Greene with the San Antonio Police Department.

"I went over to the guy to help him out. I turned him over and I saw his gunshots," says witness Samuel Diaz.

He tried to help Arzola after he saw the shooting just feet away from him. But it was too late. "I held up his head. His eyes were half open. I knew he wasn't going to make it so I just left him there and called the police," Diaz says.

"A lot of people felt for this victim and this whole situation. So if we can take someone off the streets based on what's happened here, that's going to allegedly commit murder like this. That's somebody we want off the streets, behind bars," Officer Greene says.
