Texas Teacher Suspended For Ferguson Tweets To Resign

Updated: Thursday, November 13 2014, 05:43 PM CST

DUNCANVILLE, Texas -- A suburban Dallas teacher suspended for what administrators called "reprehensible" and racially charged social media posts about the killing of a black Missouri 18-year-old by a white police officer now says she's resigning.

In a statement issued Thursday through the Texas American Federation of Teachers, Vinita Hegwood (HEG'-wood) also said she regrets messages she posted on Twitter reacting to the killing of Michael Brown.

District spokeswoman Lari Barager says the board will still meet Friday morning to decide whether to accept Hegwood's resignation or fire her.

Hegwood, who is black, taught English at Duncanville High School before the tweets posted Friday with expletives and derogatory references to whites and blacks.

Brown was unarmed when he was killed Aug. 9 in Ferguson, Missouri, leading to ongoing community unrest.
